As most regulars here know, my master's degree is from UF. I attended UF from '99-'01 and still have many very close friends who still work on the UF campus and many other friends whose blood is orange and blue. I casually follow their athletic programs but the purpose is primarily to find nuggets of stuff that I can use to give them shit. The Aaron Hernandez stuff has gotten a ton of mileage.
UW has been relevant in football and men's basketball for just over two decades. In that same time UF was also nationally relevant in both sports. With the bowl tie ins and the frequency that the two schools have made appearances in the NCAA tournament it's weird that it took this long for the two to cross paths in the post season. Florida did just come out of a few shitty football years but in the last 23 years or so the two schools have arguably been the most consistent in both sports.
Twice UF and UW have been in the same Final Four.
When Florida seemed to slip back into the Citrus or Outback bowl, UW was playing in Pasadena.
When UW found themselves in the Citrus or Outback, UF seemed to be a notch above playing in a BCS bowl.
...or they just barely missed each other by one bowl game spot.
UW has faced SEC schools that were good in one or the other multiple times such as Auburn and Georgia in football and Kentucky in basketball...but never the one that has been solid in both. I'm not too familiar with the post season history of UW Volleyball so there might be something there...and I am probably one of the few who remember that UW played UF in the women's NIT title game a bunch of years ago. It's been a long time coming for these two to run into each and other and it will finally happen next weekend.
