Posts: 156 April 19, 2012 7:28 AM	I read the 2 forums (Buckeyville and Badgernation) twice a day. I also read the Milwaukee Journal since I grew up there, and the Wisconsin State journal. I also check ESPN online for the College Football and Basketball news. Occasionally I watch Sportscenter but never watch the talk shows. I can't stand the constant prattling of announcers during games and would love to put Matt LePay and the radio on during games but the timing is off. I TiVo all games. If it's a nice day out I'd rather golf or go fishing and watch the game in the evening. Sometimes I have to go several hours, if not half a day not picking up my phone or listening/watching anything that would say who won the Badger game today as I want to pretend it's "live" for me when the time comes for me to watch the game. This way I get to enjoy the outdoors during the day, zip through commercials via TiVo, and totally relax in my sweats with a good beer or two in the comfort of my castle.

He said that when he originally heard the story, he figured that there must have been some evidence of tampering or lying to justify the long list of schools. However, when he heard Ryan's explanation yesterday that the ACC ban resulted simply from the possibility that the Badgers might end up playing one of those schools in the Challenge, he agreed with the hosts that such an explanation was not convincing. I'm not wearing a brown paper bag. I'm just bothered when Ryan first suffers a completely self-inflicted wound, and then insists on compounding the matter by dragging things out. You can wait for all the evidence to come out, but opinions and impressions are being created now. And they'll remain most folks' impressions, no matter what you hope the evidence will ultimately show. People aren't going to wait around for Bo Ryan to dribble out the "truth" over the course of days, weeks or months.

Posts: 5645 April 19, 2012 7:58 AM	TGP, Lucas, and LePay for the Badger stuff. I don't follow very much national sports media. The Hang Up and Listen podcast from Slate is pretty good -- the guys are really smart sports geeks. I'll listen to Rome for a few minutes on occasion, and I agree he's entertaining. I love it how he says right after every interview he does, "That was a GREAT interview!"

Posts: 1379 April 19, 2012 8:06 AM	I watch Mike&Mike while I'm getting ready for work. Other than that it's mostly message boards. I don't listen to much sports radio. Seems like many Iowa fans have been tweeting Greenie today about the Brust situation, because they talked about it and, of course, didn't point out the many differences. Now they are talking about one year scholarships and coaches dumping players. Everyone seems to be Ok with just about everything except the entire ACC restriction.

Posts: 2920 April 19, 2012 8:08 AM	My first stops during the day are Jsonline and madison.com to read the sports news for all the local Wisconsin teams. I have the sports radio on all day which has Mike and Mike, DP, Rome, Colin Cowherd and Doug Gotlieb (I think).... but I rarely make it past Rome and pay little to no attention to Mike and Mike. DP and Rome are entertainers and they have a wide selection of guest who they interview very well in my opinion. I get ESPN the magazine and generally like the content and the writing but usually don't get through all of them before they hit the recycling bin. We used to watch Sports Center every morning but that's long gone by the wayside as it just got too obnoxious for us. I tend to like shows/articles that break down the x's and o's of the game or tell a human side of the story. I find game summary articles and general pre-game hype type articles to be completely useless. I started listening to a H.S. radio show out of River Falls every Saturday in the winter and I really enjoyed that as it got me caught up on a lot of the local sports scene in NW Wisconsin. I try to catch The Journey on the BTN as much as possible as I enjoy that show as well. The College Sports station on XM has some good shows as well, as long as it's not SEC football dominated. I really enjoyed the Golf Channel on XM when I had it. The one thing I have learned to do, is take a lot of writer's opinions with a grain of salt. They are there to invoke a response from people and may or may not actually believe what they are saying. Greeny just called Bo Ryan despicable.... yes, it po'd me but I then heard the b.s. he spewed about how it was ridiculous for Wisconsin not to let a guy go to Marquette (hey dumbass, that's a normal rule between Wisconsin and MU, it goes both ways) and how it was maybe slightly plausible that Bo would block JU from the rest of the Big 10 ... again Greeny, get with it, it's a common practice. It's at that point that you realize once again, he's making a judgement on something he knows very little about..... but hey, that's it job, so I take it for what it's worth. What a cretin. It must be tough to face the media when everyone in the room knows the other coach just came into your building, with less talent (on paper), and drank your fucking milkshake - again. In the end, it really doesn't matter how I gather information or anyone else around here.....it matters how the kids get their information. The success of any college program hinges on the whims of 18-21 year olds that have been a part of the Internet/Twitter/Facebook/instant message/instant information age a large majority of their lives. If they hear it, it is a story, no matter how long or short it lasts. I have a soft spot for guys like Fran.....it is much simpler to just ignore all the techno mumbo jumbo and play it off because it doesn't matter to you, and that is totally fine in my book. My dad is exactly the same way. However, the habits and preferences of 30-70 year old men aren't close to being reflective of the habits of a 20 year old that is a popular athlete and plugged into the social scene. I simply don't have time for all the sports coverage on TV. Life has gotten far too busy. I follow my teams instead of following the entire leagues. And I have no patience for all the stupid hype / air time filling shit on the 24/7 sports schedule. Lots of stupid topics re-cycled over and over again. A-Rod gossip. Breakdowns of the Yankees/Red Sox. Tiger gossip. What's wrong with the Mets? Let's all suck the collective dong of the Knicks, just because. There is far too much sports television for what is worth my time to watch. This is exactly where I am. Like news, I read the paper because I can decide how to allocate my attention. On tv, you are captive to what they want to talk about, and 99% of the time I am only interested in the Packers, Badgers or Brewers. Only as background when I am on the treadmill or the athletic club do I have Sportscenter (or the like) on. I used to have a soft spot for The Sports Reporters, despite how insufferable Lupica and Ryan are. Andersen is a big-time coach. Alvarez, after two weeks of secrecy, just made a big-time hire. And now, Wisconsin is positioned to remain a big-time program for years to come. - Stewart Mandel

I wish I didn't care as much about stuff like this either. I check twitter and this board daily, and will usually check scores/standings on the internet somewhere. I have my columnists and bloggers I like to read, but don't do much radio or TV other than actually watching games. I like Jalen Rose's podcasts on Grantland about the NBA along with some of the stuff Simmons guests provide on the B.S. Report. I think these hour long pods are better than traditional radio because they allow guys to give good info and are usually a longer, more in-depth conversation.

While I'm definitely on the long end of that age spectrum I have no doubt that 20 year olds won't give a damn about this either, much less 17 year old high school players. In fact the only "damage" here is the ego bruising of the post-college aged guys who listen to these sports media nitwits, and there's an obvious way for them to avoid that. As I said days ago, once Uthoff commits to one of the hundreds of programs available to him, which he will do soon enough, he will cease being a tragic figure (cough, cough) and the media boobs will drop this "story" like yesterday's news. Which is exactly what it will be. Then, no doubt, they will turn back to their intense coverage of the rampant cheating and out of control, brawling players and university-orchestrated coverups at other programs. - "What the heck; it's just life. The difference in importance between the cheating going on and the "tragedy" of minimal (and appealable) restrictions on transferring are truly the mountain and the molehill. The media boobs prefer to ignore the cheating because it hits them where it hurts -- it takes product away from them. But the possibility that an Indiana or Kentucky or Carolina might not get another great player because they can't engage in the commonplace indirect tampering that occurs in these transfer situations?
