Is AJ Pierzynski Using PEDs?

Here is a link to his career stats. He's never hit more than 18 homers in a year and this season he has 23. This should be the 12th consecutive year he has caught at least 128 games (barring injury). 35 year old catchers don't suddenly find power do they?

He's having a year like the catcher did in Bang the Drum Slowly. Hope it ends better though.

He's got more protection in the lineup this year than he has in years past and plays in an extremely hitter-friendly ballpark in a division that has shitty starting pitching in bulk. As we've seen in baseball anyone could potentially be on PEDs, but there are other things to factor in.

I get it--if Melky Cabrera can figure out how to juice in the post-steroid era, then anyone else having a good year must by extention be juicing.

He is also striking out more and is on pace for a career low doubles (as an everyday player). Damn those PEDs for robbing him of plate discipline and gap power!

Actually, the juice might be turning some doubles into HRs and causing his timing to be off, thus the SO. His slugging and OPS are career highs by a huge mark, as well. He is also in a free agent year, so the cost-benefit of getting something extra statistically is very high...one more good-sized contract if he is juicing and doesn't get caught vs. fading into the woodwork anyway. I'm just saying that stranger things have occurred.

I don't put anything past anyone. It might be, it might not be. I do know the guy shows all the results of using asshat extract on a regular basis. He is both a terrific ballplayer and an enormous pain in the ass. I could see him having regular career year, or reaching for some better living through science.

Solid points. I would say that he adjusted his swing and Thus more HR. I disagree slightly about the contract. HR or not he will start spring training at 36. Any moronic gm that would throw out big dollars to a 36 year old catcher who hit a career high in hr post steroid era is still dumb enough to do it with 15 hr. AJ is an asshat. No doubt.

How sad is it that during August fans of the twins and crew are reduced to talking about him. Wait till next year!

This doesn't shock me. He's the sort of guy you love having on your own team, and becomes an asshat as soon as he goes someplace else. Sometimes guys who are asshats on the playing field can be nice dudes in person. Some guys that seem like awesome dudes on the playing field are asshats in person. Hating on AJ is just a fun and easy thing to do- he's like a heel in pro wrasslin'- and I get the sense he cares 0% about the fact I think he's an asshat as a player, so we're both cool with it. He has been a solid player for a lot of years.

AJ should have made the Allstar team as an alternate. He is hitting .300 with 23 HRs and is a solid defensive catcher. Also a smart base runner. The other day he scored all the way from from 1st base after a single when no one was covering home plate.

You're right. Wasn't it a result of a collision between Toronto players that allowed him to get to 3rd? and then to home when he saw no one covering home plate? I didn't see the play but only heard about it.

It was against Oakland. He was running on the pitch and the hitter grounded it to the gap between SS and 3B and both of those two ran into each other but the SS still got the throw off for the out. AJ rounded second and never stopped and got to third, saw the Oakland catcher was coming over to cover third and that no one was at home, so he scored the run untouched. Very heads up play but a bit of a comedy of errors by the A's.
