Now, most dems. are against offshore drilling and don't think it will really help. Most repubs. think that speculation has little to do with oil prices, that this is purely driven by supply/demand.
This thread is not meant to rehash these issues or positions. It is designed to discuss whether BOTH parties can act like grown ups, recognize that compromise will be necessary to get anything done here and to reach a true compromise, where neither side is truly happy, but the American people benefit from a legitimate effort to address these issues in a substantive way.
Normally, I would say fat chance. But we are in a hotly contested election year and it seems to me that both parties have an interest in being able to say they attacked this issue in a bi-partisan way.
So what do people here say. Does this get done? And if so, do we simply get a weak bill that doesn't accomplish the objectives of either side?
