WhatVinceWhere wrote: A book that's consistently recommended here is Guns, Germs, and Steel. I tried to read that book, but I just couldn't get into it. I found it incredibly boring and it couldn't hold my attention whatsoever. It ended up back at the library before I could put much of a dent in it. Kind of odd, since I love non-fiction, but that book just didn't do it for me.

Look, you have been happy being semi-literate for a decade, and you're coming here to ask what you should read. If you can't figure out what you like to read, and you haven't actually done much reading for a long time, then why bother? You either like to read, or you don't. Don't make it into something that you think you should do. You're an adult. You don't have to read. No one cares if you do or don't, so don't make an issue of it. Watch Cops, WWF, South Park, or whatever, have a twelver, and enjoy yourself. We like you even if you don't read.

Dava Sobel's Longitude is pretty good too - especially if you've ever been to Greenwich.

Watch Cops, WWF, South Park, or whatever, have a twelver, and enjoy yourself. We like you even if you don't read. Despite all evidence to the contrary, I actually do like to read. I just don't do it much (in book form), which makes it no different than a lot of things in life that I like to do. My every-once-in-a-while desire to enhance my book-reading habits has nothing to do with what I feel I should do based on what others think; rather, it's more of an inclination to revive an old habit. Starting this thread was as much to feed a curiosity as it was to solicit recommendations for the next book I grab off the shelf. I also wonder what the responses would be to a "Movies everyone should see" thread. There are a handful of flicks that I've never seen that astound people when they find out; they're of the impression that everyone has seen them. Being in Barnes & Noble got me thinking about books, so that's why I started this particular thread. For the most part, I don't think it has gone the direction I intended. For example -- and I don't mean to pick on JSG, but his was the first response -- I'd never put Bo Ryan's autobiography on an all-encompassing must-read list. Granted, I haven't read it, but unless you're a Badgers fan, a basketball fan, or a coach, I'm not sure it really has a broad appeal. What I was trying to get at was probably more of "The Great Gatsby"-type books. What we have seems to be mostly "Here's some books I enjoyed; maybe you will too," which is fine, because the thread is now an exceedingly wealthy repository of what I'd imagine are solid recommendations. And maybe that's what the thread was destined to be, regardless of what I thought I was trying to get out of it. So Prep, feel free to add your suggestions. Not for me, but for the rest of the surly pricks that hang around here. At any rate, the responses have at the minimum reminded me that I have read at least three (not two) books over the past 10 years. (Never did finish the last couple chapters of "Moneyball," otherwise I could chalk up a fourth.)

I'm going to copy this to the archive/HOF board, because there are some good ideas here and I always forget them.
