I liked the comment by the poster named "anonymous" agreeing that the failure to have to sign a name gives people freedom to say things they might not otherwise say. Text: I read your column on fan message boards today and wanted to comment. Yes there are a lot of idiotic comments made on message boards. But not all such boards are the same. And while people may use funny names, you might be surprised to learn how many of us actually know who most of those "anonymous" posters are. Message boards aren't a form of journalism. They're a way to develop a community based on some shared interests. They're more like a water cooler than a newspaper. Their main function is to connect people. For years I was a member of the BadgerManiac.com community, but now find myself having migrated with a modest number of those folks over the Buckyville.com. I've lived in the Washington, DC area for 25 years. We don't get much news about the Big Ten in general or Wisconsin in particular out here. These online communities not only help me keep abreast of UW athletics in a way I never could without them, they provide a place where I can talk with other Badger fans--something that I rarely get to do with my neighboers and work colleagues (the vast majority of whom do not know or care about Wisconsin athletics). Moreover, I've met dozens of members of those communities. In fact, there's an annual get-together at one of the away football games. Here in DC the Buckyvillians meet from time to time, perhaps to go to a Nationals game or just to have drinks or dinner together. When other Buckyvillians come to town, we usually create an event around their visit. As a result, I've probably met more than half those who regularly post on the site, and expect to meet more. The site also has a moderator who does a pretty good job of policing the discussion. But more importantly, lots of us do active self-policing of the community. When people write outrageous things they get slapped down pretty quickly in most instances. So while I agree that these communities can be places where a lot of misinformation gets transmitted, they're also a way for fans, especially those far from home base, to stay in touch with what's going on, and to share views with other fans. But he ignores one of the best features of message boards -- a feature that no doubt has him and his brethren sweating: More and more people are turning to message boards as a source for information and commentary. For someone whose job it is to provide information and commentary, message boards are a very real threat.

(We write controversial crap that has no basis in fact so that readers will talk about us and read our schlock. And then when they respond we can laugh at them and provide some witty response that will make them feel small and petty, cause we have journalism degrees which makes us experts in everything that they're not.) We want as much input from readers as possible. We monitor, but don't discriminate between the informed and the incorrigible. Just about every other board I've been to has quite a lot of stupid posters, and this place seems to be pretty good. Just check out the comments on just about any Youtube video for an example of people just spewing whatever crap comes to mind. I honestly don't care about this. Just bored at work and have a lot of desk warming time....

I can't believe you people like the new floor. I guess because you're older it's good enough to have an OK floor, just because UW had a lot of crappy floors in the past. With as far as this program has come, I think fans should expect a floor that's the best in the country, or at least in the final top four. In order to do that, UW must get at least a few of the finest pieces of wood in the country, and I see no reason why it can't. Otherwise, all UW will ever have is a bunch of nice regular season floors. -wisportswriter

I find it ironic that the headline of the article is "Baggot: more accountability, facts needed with online opinions." The whole "Earth to Andy Baggot" thread was started when Baggot incorrectly stated that Bielema hadn't beaten Joe Pa and Penn St when in fact the most memorable victory in the Bret Bielema era was a win over PSU. I don't believe Baggot ever took accountability for the error as I read the next few articles written by him and don't remember him indicating he made a factual error. And it just doesn't relate to the sports world. Hell, I posted something related to my industry that was public knowledge, but not commonly known. A couple hours later, my office gets a call concerning the issue from the Wisconsin State Journal. Baggot is no different.

Buckyville is one halfway decent message board out there in the interwebs, while about 95% of them are people who don't know each other personally. I agree with most of what you wrote to him, except the "it's more like a water cooler than a newspaper". At pretty much every board (including this) people say things they would never say to someone's face, which you can't do at a water cooler, lest you get your nose broken. That's Baggot's main issue, and I think most people can agree with him on that. Similar things have been said on this board (I seem to remember a thread where Monsignor mentioned that his rule was "if you can't say it someone's face, don't type it", however, very few people (including myself a lot of times) follow that). I honestly don't care about this. Just bored at work and have a lot of desk warming time....

He's a pretty good guy - at least was a good guy as a college freshman. Down to earth and fairly intelligent. IIRC, he lived with a football player.

Baggot was specifically discussing local sports entities, which by definition drastically narrows the audience vs. a global site like youtube. Even on youtube however, if you check out videos related specifically to a smaller community, the comments will almost all be pretty well in line with common decency. Predicting the quality of discussion of a given message board is pretty easy: 1. What is the "tie that binds" all the people in this online community? -if it's a sports team board for instance, volatility potential is pretty high 2. How many members are there? -there's probably a sweet spot for numbers, and it ain't real high 3. How many posts does the average member have? -this can get thrown off due to the life of the board, but generally speaking internet posters get better with reps as their contributions have to stand up to criticism 4. How many of the members have met at least five other members face to face (someone they didn't previously know)? -five may not be the right number, but it has to be more than one. Assign some numeric value to those four questions and you can be pretty comfortable in estimating how solid or how awful the discussion will be. Speaking as a very "unanonymous" poster on this site, Baggot's article reads like he's preaching to the choir of older folks that never jumped on the internet bandwagon and never will. This is actually not a bad short term idea for pandering to the folks that will continue to get the paper; it also sounds at least a little like sucking up to the boss. However, as others have noted in this thread it's a bad idea for the longer term. Just as games like Guitar Hero have made painfully obvious, while people do like to listen to rock stars, what they really want is to BE rock stars; online message boards allow people to distribute their ideas and opinions to the masses. Newspapers should be actively seeking ways to harness this movement; shitting on it instead is just going to see them buried beneath it. But then, it's a bit like Napster (albeit on a much smaller scale) - we're working on a way to profit from this, but in the meantime we consider it criminal activity and will prosecute those that engage in it. Well, it seems to me that people at the water cooler (I've never actually seen discussions like this at a water cooler, but that's for a different topic) are pretty free to say what they want about coaches, players, administrators, etc. because the coaches, players, administrators, etc. aren't around to hear it.
