I've been through the sleep testing, etc. and used the machine and various masks, and for me they are horribly uncomfortable and not very effective. My diagnosis was only slightly moderate sleep apnea, so I'm looking for a less intrusive option to try.

I've tried Breathe Right, and it has no effect on snoring that I can tell. I don't think they have any effect on anything, other than looking like a dork. Nostrils don't collapse at night. That ain't the problem. Most snoring is caused by the tongue drifting back into the throat cavity and narrowing the airway such that the force of the air being pulled in cause the tissues of the tongue, throat and palate to vibrate. That's why it sounds like "sawing Zs." So, when you're a little too chubby, there's more fat in your head and throat, tightening up the airway. That's why losing weight helps reduce snoring. Those CPAP machines actually increase the air pressure of the whole process, thereby expanding the airway with force and eliminating the vibrating. That's why those reduce snoring. I could see adjusting the position of your mouth being a solution. I think that's why I snore when asleep but not until I fall asleep. Because the position of my mouth and tongue change after I lose consciousness. I'd consider giving ZQuiet a try.

Agreed on the weight aspect - there definitely has been a correlation in my case. It is also true that those strips don't work well for a lot of people, but they do work for me, according to my expert observer. This probably is because my nostrils already are tight (I'm a mouth breather ), and anything that reduces the amount of air coming through my mouth helps. They may also work for me because I'm a stomach sleeper (I know - bad for the back).

My weight tends to fluctuate within a range of about 15 lbs. At the low end, I don't snore. At the high end, you can hear me throughout the entire house. I know what my problem is.

My dentist mentioned the mouthguard approach after the fact, and I listened because he wasn't trying to sell the product himself. He said moving the jaw forward helps in some, but not all cases. I'm not sure how comfortable that would be, but it can't be worse than wearing a mask and hearing the rhythmic air flow of the CPAP all night long. (If you ever open your mouth while sleeping with the CPAP, you get the absolute worst case of dry mouth almost instantaneously because of the positive pressure in your nasal/throat cavities, unless you have a mask that covers both your nose and mouth.) If I had to do it all over again, I'd try a product like ZQuiet first since the cost is minimal compared to the thousands of dollars involved (even with the help of insurance) with the sleep study and hardware that you have to buy. You can always try CPAP or perhaps, more drastically, a surgical procedure to open up the breathing passages at a later time. One caution to all of this. Snoring is one thing, but many people (myself included) have sleep apnea where they stop breathing for several seconds at a time, many hundreds of times a night. This can have a serious health impact due to unrestful sleep, strain on the heart, etc. If you think you have apnea, get it checked out and do what you need to do to alleviate the condition.

A brother-in-law actually had a surgical procedure where they temporarily implanted in his throat a chip that emitted some type of radiation that would shrink the tissue in his throat, thereby expanding the airway. He still snores like a bastard.

At one time we discussed a mouthguard because I grind my teeth, but I didn't follow through because the insurance didn't cover it, and he never pushed the idea, but if it could help in this area, it may be worth it. The machine was just do darned uncomfortable, I tried several different masks, different ramping times, etc. but it just kept me awake. Weight is surely an issue in my case, and I know my dad has had this issue for years, he would be on the Olympic Snoring Team if they had one, so I'm hopeful I can find another way to address it.
