Why 2 Badger |

"I hope hockey players are more generous with that than they were for the Kohl Center,'' Nicholas told his fellow Athletic Board members Tuesday. WTF does this mean ???? Minnesota: We're going to get our shit completely pushed in twice when we play USC, but hey, at least we have the courage to measure our 2-inch cocks
with a yardstick.

Yes it is the old plan, just put it up here for those who have not seen it. You can get an idea of how the new $27 million facility will fit by visualizing it
placed sideways on the end of the Nicholas-Johnson Pavilion. I went to the Kohl yesterday to scope out the area. There is not much room but I am sure they can
find a way. They will have an issue replacing the parking spaces there because the game day parking passes for that lot were mostly handicaped spaces. I would
like to see a ramp built in the parking lot on the other side of the Kohl center. Untill the Madison school district sells that property to the UW it is not
likely to happen.

Well, here's the thing - if you put the rink running north-south at the end of the Pavilion (basically perpendicular to Murray St.), you're going to
almost certainly completely block the walking paths from Dayton street toward Gate B. Mr. Nicholas' demands to make sure that mural of his is still
visible from the street (which it's not anyway) would seem to me to contribute to an overall far less effective design.
You also have to keep in mind that the KC's loading docks are around the corner there - you'll still need vehicle access along Murray St. into where that parking lot is. This is the kind of pointless client demand that makes an architect groan. |

1-I would think, as much of a supporter as I am for the sport, that this spending is poorly timed and a bit misplaced.
2-I appreciate everything Nichols did for the UW and I am sure will continue to do. But quite frankly the squeakyball practice facility just to the west of the KC aint nothing to look at. Walked past it 100s of times without thinking twice; and I have been known to drag traveling companions miles out of the way to see something of minor architectural significance. 3-Something to consider on a larger scope, but the current crazy-quilt reconstruction of the UW campus will not be a huge improvement. This is an initial thought, considering so much of the building is still going on. But unless one counts vacuous slabs of prefab concrete there simply isn't the unifying scheme that Chancellor Rex Banner outlined. His initial theory and premise was sound. It seems to me the follow through on these plans is less so.
In fact, I wonder where Bollinger would fit in with this group of QBs? Maybe fighting with DS, maybe fighting with Tolzien for 3rd?

TristansShadow wrote:1 - I think this was just to get a design - I don't think they've fully identified financing, but having some actual blueprints would be a lot more useful to help get some donations. Still, I agree, the timing isn't the best, and I can't imagine it's easy to solicit donations right about now. 2 - Agreed. I still can't see how the overall complex will be better by putting the rink in the parking lot rather than next to the Pavilion. Certainly doing so just to save that mural (which from the previous conceptual plans would still be visible to folks in the atrium) is a poor reason. 3 - Also agreed. UW's campus architecture in recent years has left a lot to be desired. |

What mural are they talking about? The one of the two basketball players that sink into the ground? They consider that art? I thought it was just the style of
tile they bought to put on the wall...

blockski wrote: I disagree on #1. I know its only a "women's" sport, but the ladies have won 3 NCs, and if you look into the future that tide of success isn't slowing up. Maybe this will be a down year w/ out Johnson and their two best players, but in 10/11 they'll be ready to own the NCAA again. Also, there is no reason the men or women should be practicing off campus. Hockey is the 3rd biggest draw at UW, and this would be a nice addition for UW sports in general. |

Gandalf The Red wrote:I could be wrong, but I think Tristans is saying it's a bad time in terms of the overall economy and UW's budgets, not in terms of the sport itself. Hell, for the sport alone, UW's been playing without on-campus practice ice for a decade now. Nobody denies that issue - but raising the money and spending it on a hockey rink during these economic times is a tough sell. |

blockski wrote: I fully understood what he meant blockski. No reason not to start the process now and if it takes a couple extra years to raise the money and what not that if fine. It would be stupid to shelve the idea because of a bad economy and be behind several years assuming things actually turn around. Never know if there are some alums who have some money regardless that would support a hockey only facility; if its not going forward you won't find out. If Brett Beilima (however you spell his name) can get paid bags full of money to suck it up in the Big Ten, the atheltic dept should have money to get this started. (some sarcasm intended) |
