This is a petty and sad move on the part of the other SWAL schools. (Aside from SW, apparently.)
Yes, I'm a Darlington HS grad, but my opinion would be the same either way. I didn't give a rip whether we played Fri. afternoon or night.

IIRC they had a stud RB that year that carried them to state. '94 - I was a senior on the '93 team that had the distinction of being the first DHS team to lose in the state final.
You're probably thinking of FB Dean Wagner.

What does Bud say? He probably refs over there?
I wouldn't call the other schools petty , because these concerns are legit, just overblown when you figure in missed class time for other events, and it only happens every other year. These were my comments on the WSJ Blog: There are other schools without lights, and they start games at 4:30 or Saturday afternoon(which many don't like either). When you say they only miss an hour, that's not true. Opposing teams usually like to arrive about 90 minutes before game time, so an hour bus ride means leaving at 11:30. Then there is the issue of fans. Do they close down the school early on those days? What about adults fans/parents who need to leave their jobs? How many people miss those games because of work responsibilities? Opposing schools only come to Darlington once every other year, so I'm sure they view it as a hardship. None of these issues seem to be all that big a deal, or insurmountable, but throw them together... I'm sure the people in Darlington, esp. the school personnel love this. They can attend/work the games without it completely messing up their weekends. The school has built in game workers, the band kids are already there(I'm a band guy and would be thrilled to start at 2:00), etc. etc. Crowd control is probably easier at that hour as well. No fans who had four beers at the fish fry at that hour! The coaches probably love it, because they can go scout every Friday night, and that probably rankles opposing schools (our NW Wisconsin school plays it's homecoming game on Saturday and it's like a conference coaches meeting!). Missed class time is an issue for schools, esp. when schools are under the microscope for test scores, etc., but truth be known, the kids usually are all geeked up by noon on Friday waiting for the big game anyway, so play it and get it over with!

Lancaster grad. Always have fond memories of the Darlington games and getting out of school early. Everyone went to the games as well since it was school or
the game. Horrible decision.

we played Darlington one Fri afternoon and won. It was a great day weather wise and first time I ever saw an afternoon football game. If it only happens once a
year, I think it is kind of petty to make them push back the start. Gee, when I was in high school the golf team, track team and baseball teams left early in
the school day too.

Wow, never heard of that, and I knew some kids that played for Darlington in the early 90s. Just never came up in conversation, I guess.
We once hosted a non-conf. game against Green Bay Premontre, and their kids were all jacked up to play under the lights at our place. I remember being shocked that a varsity team usually played in the daylight. I absolutely loved playing under the lights and never saw a regular season day game (varsity) in my life. |

I like the history of days games but we voted for change. Night games will be just fine too. Matt Lauer can Suck it! |

I'm baffled by this thinking. Other schools play there once every two years. It's not like they're losing a ton of school time. I would be
curious as to how much school time is lost to golf, track, baseball, softball, and any other spring sport compared to that one football Friday every two years.
It sure seems petty to me.
