I notice that the Men's team is running in the Jim Drews Invitational this weekend - Jim was my gym teacher in about 4th grade in Green Bay - small world.
But when I was looking up Jim, I found this new book by his wife: Run at Destruction: A True Fatal Love Triangle by Lynda Drews - about a murder in a running love triangle in Green Bay in the early-mid 80s. Who
knew?!?

I was in college at UW LaCrosse ran Jim ran there-he was awesome. Lost track of him though and thought he might have passed on, as many invites are named after
someone who has. Good to learn that he is alive, well and retired from GBay as a guidance counselor. Has two sons. Would not have known any of this without

My initial impression is that it was set up nicely for spectators who didn't want to move around much to follow their people. I'm not sure how it would handle hundreds of people running around like mad (as they do at the NCAA meet, and even at the high school state meet up in Rapids). There was one giant pathway that was cut across the various loops, but tall prickly stuff everywhere else (not the kind of stuff you want to be running through in shorts, that's for sure). I'd love to get out on the course and run it myself ... but that would require getting back into running shape first. I've got a long way to go just to get back into bad shape. |

I have been to both meets at the new course. I think it is a nice course from a fan's perspective but I don't have any other courses to compare it to.
The member of the UW men's cross country team that I know said it was challenging when I asked him about it. It has several loops so several different
distances can be run there depending on which loops are used. There are several places fans can see the runners if they are willing to move around a little.
One thing I wish they would do is hand out maps of the course being run that day so spectators know where the runners will be throughout the run. The first meet there was shorter than the recent one so loops were added to the course used for the second meet. I watched that one with the mother of the runner I know who came a long way to see her son run and we missed a couple of chances to see him during the run because we based our viewing spots on the course used for the first meet. I'm sure she would have liked to have seen him more out on the course, although we did have a good spot along the fence at the finish. |
