Posts: 3512 10/20/09 3:41 PM The Head of Alfredo Garcia	I've stayed at most of the places on the Strip, and The Hotel at Mandalay is my favorite by a wide berth (even with Forty Deuce closing this summer; I shed a silent tear when I heard that news). The drawback of it being at the end of the Strip is not an issue, in my opinion. There is a tram that runs every few minutes that stops at the Luxor and Excalibur. If you want to walk the Strip, tram it to Excalibur and you're only a few steps from standing at the intersection that includes NY NY, the MGM, and the Trop. As good a place to start walking as any. There's also an enclosed walkway that runs between all three, the leg between Mandalay and Luxor has some nice shops and restuarants in it. Luxor isn't a bad fallback casino to do a little gaming in, by the way - they've made some nice renovations in the past year plus. Excalibur is still white trash central, however - pass through quickly and don't linger. The only reason I'd stay in the middle of the Strip is if you intended to spend most of your time there. Cabs in Vegas are insanely expensive, so if you don't like walking and know where you want to spend most of your time, I'd recommend staying nearby. Paris is (or used to be) the best bargain value in the middle of the Strip. As others have noted, there are some sweet deals from the higher-end places right now, though, so explore your options.

Posts: 2967 10/20/09 6:52 PM	I'm staying in the Flamingo right now. The room is fine, but it is the leat impressive place I've stayed in my 6-7 times in Vegas. That being said, I typically pick higher-end places, so I wasn't totally shocked by this. It's "just a normal room"... nothing disgusting about it. Just nothing fancy. I payed $180 for 4 nights and I'm in the center of the Strip. For that price, I'd stay here again. Last time I stayed at Rio for slightly more, but the cab rides down to the Strip got to be a pain. We saw Mystere at TI last night. It was very good. Maybe not as good as "O", but good. Other advice I would give is if you're flexible between seeing 3-4 shows, wait until you get out here and buy the tickets at one of the "Tickets for Less" places (many hotels have them) on the day of the show. They knock off $20-30 per ticket. If you've never seen any of them, the Cirque de Soliel shows are all of similar quality. Interesting comment from Butch and Shot regarding the magicians. I'd never seen a magic show, but now you've influended me to try Penn & Teller over Chris Angel. Unrelated question... has anyone here with youger kids (like under 5) ever taken them to Las Vegas? I see this all over the Strip and I can't imagine this would be enjoyable for either the kid or the parents. I guess it may be different if you go with your wife, but still, it's Vegas. You should only be in the room for 2 reasons: (1) sleep (2) coitus. Places like the Imperial Palace practically pay you to stay there and I'm willing to bet you'll sleep just as well at the IP as you will at the Wynn. Whenever my friends and I go to Vegas we always have the "bringing kids" conversation. I will never understand it and when I see a family, I always wonder who's having less fun, the kids or the parents. Our last trip, one little girl had about 30 of those hooker cards the Mexicans hand out on the Strip...I remembered that girl's face and am willing to bet I see her working the pole in about 15 years. Maybe some hotels offer babysitting, but if I had kids I would never bring them to Vegas, ever. I've heard Penn & Teller is the show to see, but usually my priorities are strictly gambling and drinking. And while I might not be able to tell you what to do in Vegas, I can tell you what not to do while in Vegas....post on Buckyville.

His dad finally noticed he had a handful of these, and took them away "for safe keeping." The kid pestered him for the next couple days about his baseball cards, so my friend had to find out some place on the strip that actually sold a pack of baseball cards so he could quiet his kid.

Posts: 1963 10/22/09 2:41 PM	I like the Venetian complex and if you sign-up for their specials (Club Grazie) you can get some great deals. Location is hard to beat and you never have to leave if you don't want to. I don't gamble much but enjoy all the great restaurants, etc.

For as much time as I spend in Vegas, I never have any good celebrity sightings, much less playing at a table with one. The only ones I've seen are Shannon Doherty at Caesars, Jimmy Johnson (football) at Caesars, Charles Barkley at Ballys and Dale Ellis somewhere.

Sort of like having a Chuck E Cheese within most of the big properties. I've also heard a few parents lament that they dropped more cash on the kids' games than they did in the casinos.

I saw like 10 arcade games at the Flamingo and I'm sure other places had some things in their malls, but even at that... what do you do? Leave them there? If you want to spend your vacation watching your kids play video games, why choose Las Vegas? Even if you argue that kids enjoy pools and bright lights, etc; it just seems like the least practical place in the US to take kids.

The Vegas strip is pretty amazing from 40 stories up. The clubs at the Wynn are pretty sweet as well as you can see below. Word.
