Wow. Thanks for the link, wettle.
It will be interesting to see how this develops and what the story is. |

Pure wild-assed, inappropriate speculation on my part is depression.

AKA TAW wrote:That was my thought prior to reading the article, but I'm going with coach/player conflict that got out of hand. They lose in three to Illinois where she hit "only" .182 and then gets benched the next night against Northwestern. And that's benched as in not playing at all. This is a 2008 1st Team All Big Ten and 2nd Team All-American were talking about here. That's a Jenny Maastricht caliber player. That is a humiliating thing to a player with any ego at all and this is an experienced coach who certainly should have known that. I did like the fact that the coach used the word "goo" in one of his quotes. And overall, he seemed pretty defiant about the whole thing. |

AKA TAW wrote: Some of the posters who are giving their 2 cents at the papers website are being jerks. I responded to it and I too brought up possible Depression. It's her life and if she doesn't want to play VB anymore, so be it. The fact she's not playing well would be a direct result of being depressed. Not saying that's the reason. Maybe she's burned out and her hearts not into it. Who am I to piss and moan because someone else has had enough of something and decides to quit. It's their life and only they know what's best for them. People quit jobs, marriages etc. all the time, but you don't see it pasted in papers for others to jump down their throats and call them a "quitter". It's a young woman who's had enough of VB at Minnesota for a reason that's really not anyone else's business. It's not the end of VB at Minnesota. As I pointed out in my response at the paper, I bet those pissed off the most have probably never seen a VB game and had never heard her name previously.

The daughter of good friends of mine played basketball at Parker High School in the Mistie Bass era. Prior to seeing Mistie play in HS, I always said this girl
was the best basketball player I had seen play, of either sex. She could have had BB scholarships for D-2 or D-3 schools, but just said she didn't want to
do it anymore. I know a lot of parents of female HS basketball players and they constantly worry about about whether they are pushing their daughters or
whether their daughters are pushing them. When you have a high quality athlete it isn't as easy as we on the outside imagine.

"I had a player come in and quit," Hebert said, "and, as far as I am concerned, that was the end of it for me. I don't have anything else to say about it."Well, no matter the cause, Hebert certainly seems to have a lot of concern for her future health and welfare. That is the kind of coach you want to play for. |

How about the big time girls BB player who was set to go to UConn but decided she didn't want to play BB anymore. She ended up going to a smaller school to
play VB because of the pressure, and the fact she was burned out on BB. People were absolutely livid. IIRC, the Coach Auriema refused to be interviewed for
ESPN's "Outside The Lines" which did a piece on her some time ago. It was really good. How does anyone else know what's best for someone
else?
Here's an article I found about her. http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/sports/ap/basketball-phenom-delle-donne-ready-to-give-hoops-another-try-after-leaving-uconn-64495237.html
