Rodriguez will be back next year, no question about it. Should be a good game at the Camp this year. UM by 3.

As a college fb fan, I've found the Michigan story to be very interesting....and a little unusual. You've got a solid program--sometimes great--year
in and year out; but it's time for a new coach to step in due to the previous coach's retirement. So, you look to your a.d. to make the decision on
who will be handed the keys to locker room. You've got a loyal fan base who fills a 100k seat stadium for every home game, so you'd better be sure
that the guy you hire is going to keep the tradition of excellence going.
So why in the world do you hire a coach who's going to need two years to get his totally different offensive program implemented properly? Now...I won't be surprised if RichRod molds this team into a title contender by next year, or 2011 at the latest. But to ask the Michigan fans to sit through two seasons of mediocre football seems more than a little unfair to me. (We got a taste of that when we had Don Morton implementing his veer offense here for three years back in the late eighties.....and it wasn't a helluvalot of fun, I'll tell you Michy boys that.) As I said before, from what I read on the Michy board, the fans are being pretty patient. It speaks well for them. But does a program that did so well using traditional offensive football really need to go to a more "gimmicky" type of offense (Like Purdue did under Joe Tiller) in order to be successful; and in the process throw two seasons under the bus? When that happened at UW, we showed both the coach and the a.d. that hired him the door. At what point, if it even happens, would Michigan consider doing the same with RichRod and their a.d? |

Wait, did you just compare Rodriguez to Don Morton?
Ok.
RR's record this year is mediocre, sure - but it's already superior to anything Don Morton put together. Again, Michigan changed directions because they had no choice. Les Miles wasn't coming. There were no other assistants on the staff worth hiring. Carr didn't develop assistant coaches the way Hayden Fry did. And I don't think calling a spread option attack 'gimmicky' is fair - not in college football. Michigan fans are accepting of it because the know what the situation was. |

Its this simple. According to the Michigan men they will tell you they have a top 10 recruiting class every year. Here are Lloyds last 3 years
2005: 7-5 (5-3) 2006: 11-2 (7-1) 2007: 9-4 (6-2) 2008: 3-9 (2-6) Recruiting rankings: 2003: 17 2004: 6 2005: 6 2006: 13 2007: 12 2008: 10 2009: 8 2010: 14 As you can see the recruiting rankings are similar so Dick has good talent. Its like when people talk about BB great first year as a head coach. Well, most coaches are replaced due to the team being poor not on a seccession plan. For me the most telling is how Ohio State did when Tressel was brought it. 11-1, 10-3, 11-1, 6-6, 8-4. Cooper Fired. Tressel Hired - 7-5, 14-0 (Nat'l Champs), 11-2, 8-4... I don't doubt that D.Rod will be successful in two or three years. My point is that with the recruits they have D.Rod could have ran a traditional offense last year and then implement his system when he got his players. Good coaches take what they have and adapt their style to what they do well. We've seen Paul C. do that with his offenses over the last few years. Some years we focus more on TEs or the running game. Its all based on personnel. |

If you really want to judge the strength of a roster, using recruiting rankings isn't exactly the best way to do it.
I guess, by that logic, Minnesota should be tearing it up right about now. |

It sounds like your underestimating recruiting rankings, Blocksi. If we listen to the recruitniks, that's the biggest factor in determining a team's
chance for success each year.
I'll just repeat what I wrote before, and I'll stand by it. Michigan's hiring of Richrod was questionable at best. But one other point that we haven't addressed is this: how come their defense has struggled so much? They didn't put in a new system on that side of the ball, did they? Oh, and you're right, it was crazy of me to compare Richrod with Morton--I don't recall Morton getting investigated by the NCAA while he was at UW. |

badgerphil wrote: I don't listen to the recruitniks. Why should I look at the ranking of these kids when they come out of high school, predicting if they'll be good, when I can just look at the real thing? Most of their great talent graduated. 2008 was going to be a down year for Michigan regardless of who was coaching that team. Even Michigan is not immune from cycles in talent. As far as the NCAA investigation goes, let's put it this way. The consensus here is that the ShoeBox thing was completely overblown, yes? This overpractice thing makes the ShoeBox look like Watergate. The NCAA has no choice but to look into it, but the Freep article that set this whole thing off was full of some serious errors and holes in logic. If the assertion is that Michigan takes advantage of gray area in the rules, that's about as informative as an article telling me the sun will rise in the east. |

Strange Brew eh wrote:That is a valid point, he probably sacrificed a few wins to force his style of play. Certainly at the Qb position. The recruiting rankings, however, don't always correlate. If I recall correctly, Notre Dame seems to have highly ranked classes each year but the results don't show. Where have the recruiting rankings had programs like Boise State, Utah, TCU? |

There is a pretty decent website out there run by some college law professor that goes through all the details of the lawsuit and counter lawsuit between R.Rod and WVU. It shows in writing where R.Rod has to constantly backpeddle in responses. That along with my friends beliefs were all I needed to know. To be fair; he admits that he tolerated R.Rod at WVU because they were winning but most of his concerns about how R.Rod tried to push the academic side of the school with regards to recruits and current players. And this was at WVU not Michigan. However, he did have concerns about WVU long term with R.Rod at the helm and that we discussed before the divorce. |

Michigan has 3 games left: PU, @ UW, and OSU. They need one win for bowl eligibility. If they don't get that win, then it's a real question.

One win and two losses would give them a 2-6 conference record. That would be quite a pathetic bowl team, I think.

FormerlyBIS wrote:I love to make predictions like this. Michigan will lose all 3 games and RR will come back next year on a very, very short leash. But given the talent that they have recruited, I would expect a giant step of improvement, challenging strong programs like WI and IA. And that should be enough for RR to survive. If RR doesn't go 8-4 or better next year, I suspect he's done. |
