Buried a horrid Northwestern team today 75-45. Anderson with 24 and 11.
Saw my first game of the season in person today and some thoughts:
1) Anderson plays HARD every minute, sequence late in the half where she gets around an NW player to force a held ball deep in the backcourt. That's a real easy play to just put a token effort on and nobody would rag you for it, especially up 20+. That's how you get the number set she has on her career.
2) I don't know how much trouble NW's coach is in, but she should be in a bunch. NW mailed this game in from the opening tip. It was 33-10 with 3 minutes to go in the first half and NW had committed 4 fouls in 17 minutes. I commented to my wife that if I'm coaching a team down 23 with 3 minutes to go in the first half and they've only committed 4 fouls, I'm breaking a clipboard in the huddle, not acceptable effort.
3) BA watched the first half from the end of press row alone, then left. He knows he has a decision to make in about 6 weeks.
4) Regarding said decision, they're 3-6 in the conference, but have played better of late. If they go 3-6 in the second half, it's an easy decision, if they go 8-1 and play themselves into the NCAA's, that's an easy decision as well, if they go 5-4/6-3 it gets difficult.
5) NW's center (Jaeschke) is really tall, listed at 6-5, but a clean 2 inches taller than anyone on UW and they have 3 listed at 6-4. However, she wasn't getting to her spots and NW wasn't running sets to get her to her spots so everything was a 12 foot fadeaway. She's put up numbers this year, but I'm pretty sure not like that.
6) Annouced 7,744 for attendance, but actual in house was in the 5,000-5,300 range. 7,744 fills up the lower bowl and suites pretty completely and the lower bowl was likely 2/3 full so therefore my estimation. Didn't even open up the 200 level.
7) Karel had a nice game, 7 assists. Looks like a ninth grader out there, kind of a baby face.
It really seems like D'Alie and Karel either both play well or both play shaky in the same game. It will be interesting to see how that shakes out in the next couple of years.
