four blocks in the first half, and still rocking the flat top.

He now has five blocks and nine points, including a really impressive left-handed tip in.

After the first 3 bricks, he shot free throws very well. Wilson very active tonight as well. Wilson is the wild card for me this year. He has tremendous
potential IMO, and if it starts to get realized, it may make a big difference for the team.
TJ couldn't hit the ocean from the beach, but he'll be fine. Hughes could have scored 50 if he had wanted to. Oh, and cograts on your 1000th post, wcb. |

The BSU coach said (in his BSU radio postgame show) "Thank goodness we don't play athletes like this everynight - we couldn't have stopped Trevon
Hughes if our life depended on it"

Evans may have looked good against this team but offensively his game needs a lot of work. He is athletic, can dunk, can block shots but he cannot put the ball
on the floor and drive nor shoot the outside shot. Against good teams, I don't see him getting that many minutes
Actually I was more impressed with rob Wilson. |

At this point Evans reminds of kids who dominate in high school simply because they are better athletes than the players they are facing, even if their
basketball skills aren't all that advance. IMO he won't play much this year against good teams, however he looks like he can turn into a solid
contributer down the road.

Agreed. When Bo shortens his rotation against the better teams, Evans will be one of those most likely to have his minutes reduced. Intriguing player down
the road if he can develop a mid-range shot.

Leuer 7 for 8 from the floor. That's better. Wilson 4 for 6. Hughes 3 for 4. 3 steals for JaBo.

Evans was playing his first college game in front of a huge crowd. Maybe we should let him play a couple more before burying him on the bench? I'm sure Bo
will.
Can the replay be seen on BTN.com? Still have to pay for archived games, I assume? |

RadDad2005 wrote:I looked on the BTN web site, couldn't even find highlights of the game. You'd think if they have the footage, they could at least post highlights. Oh well. Good recaps here on the board. Also, I don't think anyone's burying Evans. This is really the first good look a lot of people have had of him in a game situation, and the comments are pretty universal that his game is raw, but has lots of potential. Doesn't seem like an unfair assessment that he's going to need time and polish before seeing a lot of the floor against Big Ten caliber opposition. |

I think Wilson is more of a "known" than a wild card. Expect him to be a regular and provide valuable contribution backing up Bohannon. Our guards
are (clearly) our strength this year.

Evans has potetial. As others have said he is raw right now. He doesn't have a handle and his shot is poor. He will have trouble scoring against any
defender who is in the same zip code as his athelticism because he does not have a perimter jumper that has to be respected. I wouldn't count on him
having much impact this year. I look forward to his improvement as a player because he has some skills that can be of help including the fact that he is not
shy about getting after it. I don't think anyone is writing him off for the long term. I think most are being realistic as to how much he will impact
this season. Seems reasonable to me.

Small sample size | #13 | ||

Agreed with RadDad here. People want to jump to conclusions on guys. It would be just as easy to say Berggren is junk based on this game, but he obviously is
not. So all I'm saying is take mine and anyone else's opinion with a grain of salt. It's just too early.
Things I took from the scrimmage: Ryan Evans has more offensive confidence than I expected. He was hunting for his shot and for ways to score. If he couldn't do it, that would have been beaten out of him in practice by now. I was far more concerned that he fell asleep on defense a few times. This will keep you on the bench far more than an inability to hit an outside shot. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with his mentality when on the floor. Rob Wilson is a good garbage player. Goes to the right spots on the floor. Still has that small forward feel to me because he doesn't hunt the outside shot yet. Again, too small of a sample size, but I was watching him more for next year than this one. Still lots of potential, but didn't seem like a defense stretching 2 guard yet. He'll at a minimum be able to be productive in a "little bit of everything" role this year. Bruiser - very active and long. Nice looking shot. I could see him being a nice hybrid 4 man down the road. Didn't play in the first half, but was first one in off the bench in the second. He'll be a fun matchup type player this year with big potential down the road. Trevon's left hand looked better. Tough to tell based on competition how much he has improved. I was very surprised to see Bo put him back in with 2 fouls in the end of the first half. Is he preparing Trevon to play through it (unlike any other player on the team) or did he just not care because we were playing Bemidji? Based on Bo's adherence to his own rules at all times, I'm leaning towards the fact that he is going to give Trevon the ultimate green light this year. J-Bo and Jon were both very active and aggressive offensively. They are looking to put shots up, which is good. Keaton and Jared both really went to the jump hook. It wasn't falling, but it will. We did a good job of feeding the post in general, even though it often lead to an outside shot. We really pushed tempo and it appeared to not just be due to the competition, but that the guys really want to. Bruiser even leaked out a couple times. It will be interesting to see if Bo allows that when the competition improves. I guarantee you if we give up an offensive rebound in that situation in the future, smoke will come out of Bo's ears. Overall, the team looked athletic and pretty disciplined for this time of the year. They seem to like to play together and moved the ball nicely. Roles are pretty clearly defined and we seem to have guys that find ways to score without demanding the ball. I'm excited to see where we go from here. |

RadDad2005 wrote:Dude, I'm not the coach at Wisconsin, and I don't have the authority to bench anyone. I'm not saying what should or should not happen, just predicting what I think will be the case. I'm assuming that Ryan will get the same chance as every other player on the team to prove that he deserves minutes. If he improves enough in the next month to stay in the rotation, I'll be very happy for him. |

I just watched my "archived" streaming of the game for the second time. Ryan Evans, contrary to many posts, plays better than average defense, in
fact, RE played pretty damn good defense. He hustled the entire time, did not cheat by taking the easy route, moved his feet, played off screens the way the UW
staff teaches them to (according to the video on the UW athletic website), didn't reach in with his hands or body, dropped off his man to "help
out" when an opposing player got past their man, and blocked enough shots that I would think it had to create a disruptive element to Bemidji's future
shot taking. He is NOT lost out there. He plays with confidence and he is going to get better and better (if he plays). Bo already said he can sometimes
dominate a practice, just that he needs consistancy. Ryan Evans is way better than alot of people are making him out to be. I don't think Bo is going to
sit RE's potential 10 points, 3-4 blocks, and 6 rebounds a game (probably more like 1/2 game) on the bench until he learns to handle the ball like Pops and
shoot like JBo. This is a learning process but his talent and effort is good enough right now to earn him more than occasional minutes as some posts have
stated and/or alluded too. This kid is good. And, he will be WAAAY better as the years go on. He will play alot this year.

I said last year that I could see Evans turning into a Jimmy Butler type player and I am holding true to my prediction. I think next year he will have a very
similar year to what Butler did as a sophomore,

Instead of trashing one player to support another, I'll just say that it's great to have ten quality rotation players that give us different looks.
It's looking like Bo has the pieces to play some mean chess.
