I have no idea about the books, but taking yourself and your dog to a Kennel Club training class is very much worth the time. They will teach you how to handle your dog, and the dog training that takes place there is a nice bonus. I believe in the choke chains, and don't believe in the edible reinforcer method. Dogs learn and behave best if trained with social praise and affection--basic behavior management. Hard, with a family, but everyone does need to use the same training approach. Training does not generalize well to people not doing the training. Tex is right--consistency is critical. And remember, Whirly----the dog has to be to your left when heeling!

Posts: 890 11/06/09 8:05 PM	I also recommend No Bad Dogs. Someone already mentioned The Art of Raising a Puppy. All of the Monks of New Skete books are great. Another one to look at is How to be Your Dog's Best Friend. I had 3 German Shepherds with my ex-wife, and we used the above books. Great results.

FWIW - "Cesar" is a well know dog trainer, and is AMAZING in how he can come into a home that has a 'troubled dog' and make this better ( Cesar Millan - "Dog Whisperer") His philosophy, is that there are no 'bad dogs' - just bad dog owners The Human in the house has to take the lead, as pack leader, in a sense Too many households have the dogs actually running the show If you ever watch and read about the dudes who live with wolves, and bears - its the same stuff

I took our dog to puppy kindergarten when I was in high school and had her doing all sorts of obedience things and cool tricks. Then I went to college and my parents forgot all about those obedience things. I come home to this terror of a dog who only sometimes remembers the thing I taught her. She'll be a bitch to my parents, but when I'm around, will act nicely. I'm guessing it's part of the pack thing, since she assumes I'm above her but she's above my parents. So, the moral is consistency. Get everyone on board with the rules, the commands and don't let anyone "cheat" and be good cop to the dog. Liver treats are good, but my dog went absolutely ape shit over them so eventually they were outlawed from the house. In case you're wondering, she's a pure bred Pembroke Welsh Corgi. One thing I've learned recently is that when a dog is fearful, expressing sympathy to it only makes it worse. The dog sees that as weakness in you, the pack leader.

Insurance is like $40/month but it's not a big help for the routine stuff. It's designed for catastrophic, unexpected expenses, which I've heard can run to the thousands.
