Deschutes Brewery 2009 Abyss is fantastic... |

Picked up a few bottles earlier today and I have to say that it's fantastic. A very nice stout with a good complex flavor. You can pick out the molasses
and licorice flavors, with a pleasant roasted component. Definitely a beer to savor. I may have to grab a few more before they are all gone.

I've always been a fan of their jubelale too. Same with the Black Butte XXI.

cutiguna wrote: Their Black Butte was OK... then again I'm not really a Porter fan. Saunders, I think the dedicated "specialty" beer stores up in Seattle sold out quickly. I have couple "secret" grocery stores that will always seem to get a good number of the special brews that not many people know about. Heck, one of them still had Stone 13th Anniversary Ale last month. ricecloud9 |

I'm hoping I find a few at Whole Paycheck when I am there tomorrow. Bristol Farms may have it, but they refrigerate everything - which is OK for the one now but not OK for the ones I plan to keep a while. |

I consumed a bomber of the Deschutes Red Chair IPA the other night and was not impressed. It was a below average IPA in my opinion - weak and watery.

Just had the Deschutes Black Butte Porter XXI tonight and it was quite tasty. Though the local Portland Wisconsin bar had a hell of a tap list tonight (see
below)...along with Wisconsin Trivia Night! The Ninkasi Sleighr Double Alt is a hell of a beer.
- Deschutes Black Butte Porter XXI - Buckbean Brewing Artown Pilsner - Oakshire Red Nugget Fresh Hop - Fearless Brewing Scottish Ale - Boulder Hazed and Infused IPA - Ninkasi Sleighr Double Alt - Duchesse de Bourgogne - Hair of the Dog "Doggie Claws" - Deschutes Jubelale - Ham |

Update 2: timing! Had to switch a mattress on a sofa sleeper we just got, and the warehouse was not too far from the Mira Mesa BevMo. Got there around 11
yesterday, and the register dude was oblivious. Saw beer dude holding what looked like a bottle of Abyss. Asked him and he said he just got it in, and it would
likely be gone by the end of the day. I picked up 3. He said I should take more, but I didn't want to be a piggy, plus I didn't know how much I would
like it.
Verdict: nice beer, but I don't think it is worth all the hype. Very "mild" tasting for an imperial stout, at least to me. Alesmith smacks you more on the tongue. As odd as it is, I like Stone's Imperial Stout and Ten Fidy just as much. I got some Black Butte XXI last week, and popped it open the other day. Very different - probably the most coffee taste I've had in a beer. Lots of vanilla too. I'm not sure if I liked it all that much, but thumbs up for being different. Sort of like the Ballast Point Victory at Sea on roids. I'm starting to think that between Oskar Blues and Stone, I can pretty much stay happy. |
