Most are five, as I recall. So some elements of your 100%+ inflation get diluted. I'm not a math major, but it would go something like this: (400K X 1.25) X 4 + (900K X 1.25) X 1. Your "illegal immigrant" shibboleth also contains omissions. Sure. No arguing that illegals burden the SCHOOL budgets that are derived from property tax revenue, but that's just a tax-shifting issue. Throw all illegals out of the CA schools? Yeah, that'd solve our revenue challenges. Finally, your naivete is touching. If the benefits (of the Jarvis revolution) were outweighed by the downfalls, the legislature would have overturned it by now. Are we talking about the same legislature? The one in Sacramento? Jesus, when's the last time it did anything that truly reflected the public interest? That overspending you rail about--and you're right. Who authorizes that?

Posts: 9563 August 9, 2007 10:54 PM	Even though Michigan didn't pass a true Prop 13 style property tax limitation, they've since passed two tax laws, the Headlee amendment and Proposal A, that have essentially accomplished the same thing. When you apply that to a state that doesn't have a booming economy like California, you end up with a horrifically stagnant real estate market and local governments that are tremendously underfunded, thus lowering the quality of life, and thus driving down the real estate market even more. So, the state's stuck in a one state recession, but at least the taxes aren't increasing that fast.

The Headlee Amendment was passed at the same election in which the Prop. 13-like amendment was defeated. It was, in fact, offered as a way to head off the more draconian tax-cut amendment. (There also was a third ballot initiative at that election that would have changed the entire school funding system; it also failed.)
