Which if any of these positions would cause you to rule somebody out as a candidate for POTUS?
(1) In favor of making all abortions illegal.
(2) In favor of no legal restrictions on abortion.
(3) In favor of allowing the POTUS to arrest and indefinitely incarcerate American citizens without judicial review.
(4) In favor of making owning a handgun illegal.
(5) In favor of adding a new one-dollar federal tax to every gallon of gasoline.
(6) In favor of completely privatizing social security and making it optional.
(7) In favor of national health insurance for all Americans.
(8 ) In favor of requiring alternatives to evolution to be taught in the public schools.
(9) In favor of escalating the Iraq war.
(10) In favor of removing all US combat troops from Iraq within a year.
MY REPLY, with comments:
1, 3 and 8, no go. Some others close to that

(1) In favor of making all abortions illegal. out
(2) In favor of no legal restrictions on abortion.
Surprisingly, this would make uncomfortable as well. Not a deal killer, however. We need some restrictions, IMO.
(3) In favor of allowing the POTUS to arrest and indefinitely incarcerate American citizens without judicial review. out
(4) In favor of making owning a handgun illegal.
Again - close to out. Hate absolutist positions.
(5) In favor of adding a new one-dollar federal tax to every gallon of gasoline.
Big plus. Higher prices = conservation.
(6) In favor of completely privatizing social security and making it optional.
private - yes Optional? Not likely. Maybe optional if you can prove you are saving for retirement somewhere. Can't have people losing their jobs at 65-70 with nothing to fall back on.
Maybe privatization could be phased in. Start with those under 25, or some young age. Don't want to screw those who've been paying for years.
(7) In favor of national health insurance for all Americans.
Messy, but maybe the only long term solution. It seems better than where we're headed now which makes having even a minor illness a financial catastrophy.
(8 ) In favor of requiring alternatives to evolution to be taught in the public schools.
out - if the prez doesn't understand science, he/she doesn't get my vote. period.
(9) In favor of escalating the Iraq war.
Could be a reasonable position.
(10) In favor of removing all US combat troops from Iraq within a year.
Could also be a reasonable position.
The worst for me would be 3 and 8.
