Nice mention from (former Big Ten Wonk) John Gasaway on Basketball Prospectus.

it will be interesting to see if Bo wins Big 10 coach of yr since we won it outright. There will be a lot of votes for Painter since Purdue vaulted out of nowhere to the top.

He'll be a strong #2, but I think Purdue's sweep of Wisconsin and their being only one game back pretty much has sealed the deal for Painter.

Some data to support the thesis while we wait for the Alford Trophy Round to begin . . .

In the seven years Bo Ryan has coached the Badgers in the Big Ten, here is the winning percentage (and record). It's nearly the Big One and Little Ten, folks - second place Illinois is closer to 5th than 1st.
0.737 Wisconsin (84-30)

0.605 Indiana (69-45)
0.605 OSU (69-45)
0.474 Iowa (54-60)
0.456 Purdue (52-62)

In the seven years Bo Ryan has coached the Badgers in the Big Ten, here is the average finish for each team, followed by their finish each of the seven years. No other team has finished in the top HALF every year, while we have never finished below 4th. (Sorry I can't get the numbers to align.)

The spartan folks are looking to debunk the myth that we have "so little". From a recruiting standpoint, our current squad was higher ranked recruits than the current MSU squad. Hard to argue with that.

(unless, by "so little" he means recruiting base, national perception, etc, then disregard the above).

Note that our efficiency margin of .18 per possession in B10 games is second only to Kansas among major conference teams. That is a little bit of a surprise to me.

I agree that Painter is deserving.

I'm still hopeful that Flowers will be a first teamer, but if somehow he gets overlooked, it would be kind of funny to see the outright Big Ten champs have nobody on the first team, and still not get Coach of the Year. I guess you just have to chalk UW's success up to black magic at that point.

I'm impressed with Painter's team, not just for winning much more than expected with a young team, but also the way they play. In the game at the Kohl, when UW finally closed PU's lead down to 8, then 6, then 4 points, I kept thinking, "okay, it's easy to play with a lead, but now that UW is turning on the heat, this young PU team will fold." Never happened. That, to me, was the most impressive thing about them, for a young team.

Or, as the clueless conspiracy theories claim, black-and-white-striped magic. Painter will probably win COY, but it would not be a surprise at all for Bo to pick up the honor for the job he's done.

Following is a list of the coaches with the best all-time winning percentages in Big Ten play (min. 5 years)

Coach (School) Yrs. Record Pct.

1. Bo Ryan (WIS) 7 84-30 .737

2. Bob Knight (IND) 29 353-151 .700

3. Ward Lambert (PUR) 29 228-105 .685

4. Tom Izzo (MSU) 13 144-68 .679

5. Ralph Jones (ILL) 8 64-31 .674

Bob Knight is closer to 5th place than first. It is clear that Bo is making his mark as one of the best conference coaches of all time. Just need a couple nice NCAA runs to make believers of the ignorami.

Boy, it sure appears that MSU's Big Ten Championship banners are busy gathering dust. I didn't realize that they hadn't won a title in the last seven years. I figured that had to have shared at least one with all of the props they get nationally. Final Fours do help, I guess.

Recovering Political Hack

So I was bragging on the Wisconsin stats RoadWin put together to a friend of mine. While duly impressed with Wisconsin's conference success, he asked what Bo's NCAA tourney record was. I know its average, something 8-6 or 9-6, but does anyone know for sure? I ask because I'm lazy and don't want to research this myself. That and the fact I suck at the Internet...

You know what else stands out to me? I have no recollection of any Northwestern team finishing anywhere close to 5th. Even in the Evan Eschmeyer era where they seemed somewhat competent, they didn't seem to break into the upper division. And, the Crispin era at PSU must've been longer ago than I thought, since I remember PSU getting into the Sweet 16 one year.
