I'm sure most of you remember my story from the other board about my son, his battle with leukemia, and his affection for Michael Flowers. Short synopsis: Due to his treatments and their side effects my 4 year old son was really struggling in his basketball "practices." He was having trouble making a basket. He happened to wear #22. We were watching a Badger game when he saw Michael wearing #22. I pointed out to him how hard Michael worked and that if he practiced and tried that hard, he might have success. Well, he practiced and practiced on the hoop we have, still with no success. However at the next "practice" he was unstoppable. He made everything he threw up there. "Look Dad, just like Michael Flowers."
After I posted that story in greater detail last year, Michael heard about it and contacted me via e-mail. We tried to arrange for a meeting last year. Unfortunately due to my son's treatment schedule and school we could never make it to a game.
Fast forward to today. We are in Austin (my wife is a UT alum) and we just got back from a meeting with Michael. I can not say enough good things about him. He was generous with his time. He answered all of my son's questions, he took pictures, he signed my son's hat. He gave high fives, low fives, side fives all with a smile on his face. He is truly an outstanding individual and a credit to our program. My son has not stopped beaming since we met with Michael. "This was the best day of my life Dad."
We see these guys on the court and occasionally in the community or classroom but we never get to know them. My son who has been through hell and continues to fight and battle like a warrior was given an incredible opportunity today to meet an exceptional young man. I know my son will never forget it. Neither will I.
#22 in our programs. #1 in our family's heart.
