Lawmaker proposes a season on Sandhill Cranes

I don't know who is counting those damn things but 20,000 statewide seems awfully low unless SE Shawano County has 95% of the population. 25 years ago we'd see one or two on 250 acres maybe 5 times a year. Now we'll see 200-300 multiple times a month. With corn prices rising due to the push for corn based fuel it sucks when you have to buy corn for feed because 70%-80% of your crop is wiped out in the spring by these damn things. A potential season on Wolves gets the most publicity but Cranes are a much bigger problem for more farmers.

My only concern is that sadly too many hunters are either too dumb or too lazy to know the difference between the very common sandhills and the not-at-all common whooping cranes. Yes, I know they look nothing a like but it is a concern. I say this all as a hunter myself.

I also have an issue with lawmakers getting involved in the process. This should be a DNR decision. I don't know that there is any evidence that a season - especially a fall season - will have much impact on crop damage. They need to show some evidence that this will be the case.

The state is LONG overdue for a sandhill hunt. There are a lot of things that should be a DNR decision but the WDNR is set up that it can't make any decisions (see the CC hearings). Many states have a mandatory "training" course on how to identify the differences between the birds. Hunting may not have much impact on crop damage but neither does looking at them and saying good thing we aren't shooting whoopers. These birds are fantastic table fare. A hunt could provide some revenue for the agency. I know I would fly back from Utah if I could hunt them with an over the counter tag. I would happily pay the out of state fees to shoot sandhills.

....and there are landowners who would happily pay someone to come onto their land and shoot the damn things. It's happening with turkeys. Hunting land for deer or bear is hard to come by but if you go to a farmer and ask if you can turkey hunt on his land there's a good chance he'll be happier than hell to let you do it. It could be a win-win for all involved. Another hunting opportunity, money for the WDNR, hunters might get paid for going onto private land, knock down the population a little, etc., etc.

The fear I have with this is that there will be some resistance and it will end up going to a zone/tag system like turkeys. You'll have large zones consisting of acres upon acres of public land that will get the majority of the tags leaving private zones that won't get hunted and that's where population control would make a difference. A guy that hunts turkeys on our land used to hunt public land and would get excited to simply see or hear a turkey. Since he started hunting here he has bagged a turkey every season for the past 9 years and has been done within a few hours of getting set up.

The turkey seasons should be opened up more than they already are but you've got a strong lobby group that worked to get the things reintroduced that still holds enough influence to stop something like that. They need to get away from the SW part of the state and look around at how they've established themselves in other parts of the state. If we don't get some harsh winter weather over the next few weeks it's going to be terrible. A nice harsh winter can do wonders to help control the population of cranes and turkeys. Reason #1571 why this winter sucks.

The turkeys have got out of control as well. They need to just have a set number of permits, have them over the counter. When they are gone they are gone. Screw the whole season one, season two BS. But the sandhill hunt is long long long overdue. States hunt them effectively without making the whoopers go extinct. I think the hunters do a better job of keeping the whoopers alive compared to the ultra light pilots that fly them into giant power lines.

I'm a hunter. I live in farm country, surrounded by farmers I count as friends. Not one complains about sand hills. As far as culinary value, I can't personally attest to how cranes taste, but friends that have tried them say they are not "fantastic table fare" much less what Mr Lt Governor claims as being the "rib eye" of game birds.

I think I have a clue pointer, coming from friends that have tried crane. Their consensus opinion is it isn't anything special. Eye of the beholder type thing. By the way, I've tried enough wild turkey and migratory goose to say they aren't nearly as tasty as some people claim.

I never said I was a farmer. I live in rural Dane county with farmer/neighbors' fields bordering my property all around. They rotate corn with beans. Not a one has any interest in shooting cranes.

Maybe I can distill my issue down a bit for the sake of clarity. I cringe every time a conservation program is successful, and a segment of my hunting brethren clamor for a hunt that in no way reflects a hunting tradition. Hunters shooting wolves is as distasteful to me as hunting other canines. Cranes are right behind. It just feeds the the public's perception of hunting being all about killing and nothing else. What kind of table fare is wolf meat? We spend years informing the public of what it needs to do to secure a future for threatened animals, because they are part of our environmental legacy and critical elements of our shared ecosystem. But the moment success is achieved a segment of the hunting population is asserting a right to shoot them. That kind of perception whiplash is horrible PR for hunters and hunting, and in my opinion, diminishes the stature of hunters.

Do you understand why people want shoot wolves? Coyotes are vermin and belong on fence posts. They are such an issue here we hire a guy to go up in a helicopter and shoot coyotes all day. I generally don't approve of hunting things and not eating them but if I understand the science behind the reasoning for the hunt, then I am all for it. Much like coyotrs, cougars, bobcats, fox, badger, prairie dogs etc.

Comparing crane to goose and turkey is laughable. Like most foods, if prepared correctly can be very very good. My guess is your friends over cooked the crane and it got tough. This is the number one thing I hear from people who have tried it and claim it is bad. You cannot over cook them.

Sandhill cranes do not need protection. There is absolutely no reason that they should not be hunted. Plenty of other states hunt them with no issue. So to some, it may actually be a tradition. There is life outside of Dane county Wisconsin. Out here in Utah a crane tag is a daughter after tag and is limited entry. Texas has a big season. Kansas is pretty popular too along with many other states.

Many people think it is fantastic. But being tasty or not doesn't mean it shouldn't be hunted. Coyote has no table value yet people love to hint them. Neither do the other fur bearers I listed. There are other reasons for a season.

This likely won't pass, but it is a step in the right direction. Just like the mourning dove season that had a ton of backlash. Mourning doves are now hunted and are doing just fine.

I don't know. Maybe people respect other people's viewpoints. You know, by starting threads and then getting disparate viewpoints. You know, like asking if i like this type of music will i like this? It doesn't matter if he personally likes it or not. The fact that he knows folks that don't enjoy it is enough. He didn't argue that crane was disgusting and that only idiots like it. You might take into consideration that you are FAR in the minority when it comes to eating foods. Most people don't eat foods outside of cattle, chicken, beef, pork and some seafood. I know plenty of folks that can't handle domestic things like goat or lamb. I know TONS of folks that don't like gamey meat. I happen to enjoy it. But, you are talking out of your ass if you think most folks are going to enjoy it or even call it "fantastic."

Who argued against hunting them? You are Don Quixoteing your way around here. He certainly didn't. I didn't. He said it found it distasteful. Again, this is a fellow hunter. You should at least consider his opinion without calling him clueless, he isn't me, OB, or some other effete, liberal city dweller. This is why it becomes hard to take you seriously about guns because i don't think you read or you become irrational.

Again, what he did was balance things out. I've got no stake in this, i'm being objective. Here is what i've gathered: There appear to be a shit load of cranes. In certain parts of wisconsin they are certainly eating a bunch of corn (see, i'm not disputing or challenging assertions on YOUR side). This hurts some folks economically, but helps others (sellers of corn). In other parts of Wisconsin we have reports that there isn't a crane issue.

Hunting may be a remedy for a problem (if there really is one). Hunting could bring in revenue. Some folks REALLY enjoy eating them. Some folks don't think they are great.

What am i missing?
This likely won't pass, but it is a step in the right direction. Nothing in this thread has convinced me that cranes shouldn't be shot. Just kill whatever you want and as many as you want. Let the free market decide. Let's get the gov't out of this. Let people hunt whenever they want. Just like the mourning dove season that had a ton of backlash. Mourning doves are now hunted and are doing just fine. I don't think anybody argued HERE that hunting cranes would have detrimental effects on their long term success. Another windmill.

Holy fuck. That little bolded nugget up there from TCF is an absolute gem of irony or something. Pointer might not be suggesting he is an expert in everything...there's where you differ. Sometimes he sounds as if he suggests he is whereas you have convinced yourself that you are an expert in everything. Thanks for the laugh.

I guarantee that this is a topic that could have a significant political impact to those who are affected. It was the third story on the local news last night before a triple murder/suicide and a van crash in Fond du Lac county that took the lives of three teenagers. Corn prices have skyrocketed largely due to it's use as a bio fuel. Corn crops have been decimated by these birds. The sting resides with those farmers who use that corn to feed their animals. Without corn they produce on their own land they need to buy it...at those inflated prices. In turn it costs more to produce food for human consumption. This is incredibly simplified but it's a chain reaction of sorts that makes it more difficult for a farmer to produce meat, dairy products, etc. at a lower cost.

Opening up a season on these things would be a step in the right direction. "But what about crop damage permits? Wouldn't that do the trick?" That's a very flawed system tied up in politics. If my dad applies for crop damage permits for deer or turkeys it essentially opens up his land to be hunted as if it was publicly owned. Then some jackass comes in, requests to hunt here and can't be denied. That same jackass falls and hits his head on a rock because he is a dumbass and the landowner is liable for his stupidity. The general idea of a crop damage program is fine but the way it is implemented is messed up and a huge reason why it's not as successful as it could be. Having an open season on these things allows for a pruning of the population at the same time the land owner retains control of who is allowed on his property. Every dipshit that shows up with a gun wanting to shoot a sandhill crane won't be allowed on our property. The risks are too great....having been burned once you don't want to revisit that scenario.
