He discussed his road to redemption, which recently led Badgers head coach Bo Ryan to leave him a personal note in his locker while Wisconsin was playing in the Sweet 16 at the Garden in Boston. Posts: 2004 March 26, 2012 2:15 PM I think Justin Bieber is hot	Not to toot my own horn, but I predicted success for Steimer when he was in college on various boards. I was not alone, but I am not surprised by his success. He always had a pretty jump shot and shot blocking ability. Most importantly he has the size and skill that can keep him in the association for a long time.

He has played more minutes recently after dropping out of the rotation from mid Jan to mid Feb. The problem isn't that you've bravely staked out a bold position that "is contrary the popular belief on this board." The problem is that you've said something completely ridiculous. - Los Venerables

Why in the world would you put yourself in that situation? Bo did try putting both of them out at the same time, and it really didn't work well at all. Lots of revisionist history here.

As the article notes, Greg battled a medical issue for a good chuck of his career. I don't it's too much to say this condition impaired his development as a basketball player to some degree.

Kentucky and Kansas weren't in the Big Ten at the time. Iowa, Northwestern, Penn State, Michigan, Minnesota - they didn't have elite athletes at the 4. Butch could move.

Posts: 1664 March 26, 2012 4:07 PM	Boulder- Agree with RIBG. No way Butch (or Stiemsma) could guard most 4s. Ryan had to divide the 40 5 position minutes between the two each game. I can't say his division was flawed. Butch was a big contributor, Stiemsma a valuable backup.

Posts: 5052 March 26, 2012 4:34 PM	Here are the 4/5 combos of the best teams in the B10 that year in order of finish. The teams below that were not good enough to really matter as we would have swept them with any combo: Purdue - Hummel & Johnson Indiana - Stemler & White MSU - Suton & Naymick O$U - Othello Hunter & Koufos Goophs - Coleman & Tollackson PSU - Cornley & Jackson/Jones Bo got us through that B10 season with 2 losses and an outright B10 championship by playing Krabbenhoft at the 3, Landry at the 4, and Butch at the 5. Landry basically guarded the best post player for the opponent and Butch guarded the weakest link. Stiemsma came off the bench to spell Butch. Frosh Leuer played 8 min a game, but less as the season progressed. Lots of three guard lineups with Flowers, Bohannon, and Hughes. If you played Butch and Stiemsma at the same time, one of them is going to be guarding a much quicker player, and you have to sit either Landry or Krabbenhoft, both of whom were elite defenders and were way more versatile than Stiemsma or Butch. Krabbenhoft was also a much better defensive rebounder than Stiemsma, so you would be giving up a lot of offensive rebounds if you sit Krabbenhoft. That is pretty silly to think that you could have navigated that B10 season with less than 2 losses by changing that lineup.

Posts: 2792 March 26, 2012 5:24 PM	Let's not forget Landry was good enough to get a cup of coffee in the Association and the only reason Butch hasn't spent time on NBA rosters is he can't stay healthy. In a 48 minute game and 3 games a week, there more room for a "specialist" which isn't a bad way to describe Stiemsma, than in a 40 minute game and 2 games a week.

Posts: 5743 March 26, 2012 5:55 PM	Without digging up stats to prove this, Butch was an overall better defender as well as being an important offensive player for those teams. Off-the-ball shotblocking is mostly overrated where Butch was very good at rotating and defensive rebounding. Glad to see Stiemsma playing well now, but he was playing behind some good players.

Posts: 1610 March 27, 2012 8:08 AM	Remove this ad I'm not sure if the numbers bear this out, but I recall Stiemsma being a pretty weak rebounder for his size--I certainly would not have listed rebounding as one of his strengths in college.
