(AP) - Neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman is being charged with second-degree murder in the shooting of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed black teenager whose death ignited nationwide protests. Special prosecutor Angela Corey says that the 28-year-old Zimmerman is in custody. She wouldn't disclose Zimmerman's whereabouts for his safety, but said that he will be in court within 24 hours. Corey says that authorities did not come to the decision lightly, nor was it based on public pressure. The charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. Second-degree murder is typically charged when there is a fight or other confrontation that results in death and where there is no premeditated plan to kill someone. link Given that the special prosecutor had ruled out first degree murder by not using a grand jury (apparently how it's done in Florida), this would seem to be the strongest charge she could bring. Looks as if she waited until he was in custody before publicly announcing the charge. These ARE the good old days!

There will be eyewitness accounts, medical evidence, Zimmy's history of supporting the AA community, his own hispanic background, etc that will protect Zimmerman. I don't believe for a second that Zimmy provoked Martin by following him, even if he did piss off Martin, that is no reason to start beating a hispanic guy going about his job - clearly identifiable as a security guard. Being a hispanic security guard in a private community doesn't warrant a black man beating you in the face. From there its a matter of Zimmy having the right to protect himself by any means necessary. Manslaughter would have been a much smarter charge. If they had rock solid 2nd degree evidence, does anyone really believe they wouldn't have pursued it? This was a hispanic man killing a black man, not a private school yuppie killing a black man. There was nothing to hide....pressure on the DA/police brought this charge. I'm cool with that so long as it shuts people up, until after the trial. If Zimmy were white, he'd probably go down. He isn't white. Hispanics are starting to get a little riled up over this case....just a dust up today at the high school between the hispanics and blacks. As I suspected, progressives have a Koch Fetish.

What good would the murder weapon do them? They know Zimmerman killed Martin. The question is whether it was in self defense or not.

During Corey’s three year tenure, the population in Jacksonville's Duval County jail has risen, despite a drop in crime in the city and an overall drop in prison populations around the state, according to a study of her record by the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. "The single most important factor as to why the jail is so full in Duval County is prosecutorial style -- Angela Corey's aggressive style as prosecutor," Michael Hallett, the chairman of criminology and criminal justice at the school who led the study, told Reuters. "Compared to her predecessor, she is much more aggressive in terms of filing criminal charges, much less likely to dismiss charges... In that state the defense could convince an entire jury that Zimmerman is a hero. All they have to do is convince one juror he's a victim. Ulbian is right. It's difficult to get a conviction in high profile criminal cases that have generated a lot of disagreement and controversy. Is Fox bitching yet that this was done to cave in to Jessie and Rev. Al, that the officials were afraid of riots if Zimmerman wasn't charged, that poor Mr. zimmerman's life is now ruined as a result of reverse discrimination, and how it perverts the legitimate civil rights movement Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity have so much respect for? That will be their line for the next week. As always, this post is written with the express proviso that I am not a chicken little. The sky is not falling. My office window does not have a ledge. I'm happy we won. I heard some ranked teams even lost. I'm glad we are not Virginia Tech. I like our coach. I know these are 19 year old kids. The season is young. Mistakes will get cleaned up. Fowler said even Alabama threw an interception once. The other guys are on scholarship, too. After living through the Don morton era, I'm just glad to be here.

If it is proven that the cops fudged reports to protect Zimmerman, I hope they get prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Remember when teachers, public employees, Unions, Planned Parenthood, Acorn, NPR and PBS crashed the stock market, wiped out half of our 401Ks, took trillions in TARP money, spilled oil in the Gulf of Mexico, gave themselves billions in bonuses, and paid no taxes? * * * Me neither.
