Two excellent documentaries were shown on PBS last night. One on the crash of 1929 and the next on the crash of 2008. How little we've learned about unmitigated greed and how human nature is key to markets. Politics intertwined with finance has repeatedly in our history been recipes for disaster.
Evident in the Frontline presentation was the total incompetentcy of the Bush Administration and the slavish dedication to the purity of markets. The belief in the sanctity of the Greenspan doctrine proved to be the run up to the financial disaster we are experiencing today. It's clear that the country trusted the wrong ideology in both 1929 and in 2008. The herd mentality in congress existed in both cases. There were voices of reason but in neither case were they listened to and taken seriously. .
