Posts: 1200 April 28, 2012 8:58 PM	Some quick thoughts: Stave has left Joe Brennan in the dust. I saw Terrance Floyd lay the wood a couple of times, ditto on Caputo. Damn, there were a lot of guys that didn't play today. Seemed like a November day, breezy and chilly. Hammond had a couple of nice grabs. Mason dropped a couple, but then made a crazy catch that was just OB. Inconsistency like that will drive a coach nuts. It seemed like the punting sucked today, anxious to see the stats. Gordon ran a ton today. Looked good to my eye. He's earned some rest after so much work. Jake Keefer was heard a lot today. Off the top of my head, 2012 contributers who didn't play today: Ball, White, Garner, Abbrederis, Watt, Borland, Taylor, Devin Smith, Gilbert, Ethan Armstrong, Pederson (did he play?) After several hours with my old college roomie at the Avenue, we both decided there were better things to do on a cold rainy spring day. We were correct. I took a nap. I hear Gordon looked good, Stave > Brennan, and no other anticipated starters were noticed by the < 5K there. Bless the Badgers.

Caputo has excellent instincts, it'll be a matter if he has enough lower body strength to get off / avoid blocks. C-RG-RT for the second team have some growing to do, as they lined up today. Though center exchange was much better. Really like the way Melvin runs. All knees and swivels in the hole and then suddenly at the second level, real fast to the outside too. His hinges work different from yours and mine. And how does he finish a run? With a shoulder. Thank goodness he told Iowa to buzz off. An up day for Stave. Frederick and Groy flowing quickly to the outside on several sweeps for Gordon, Canada hasn't changed that part. Or the TE / HB presnap movement. Not a lot of TBs in the slot --- because neither Ball nor White played. But also we didn't see a lot of a triple formation that Canada showed in some scrimmage settings, including using two TEs split out. Very much an I formation / double wide out set today. Someone get Duckworth a tape of Luke Swan running his middle out route a few dozen times.

Brennen would of looked better if not for a couple of drops, Stave had one bad int,on a throw that was thrown short. Keefer impressed me, Hammond impressed, still can't wait for Phillips or O'Brien to make waves this fall. ... ...was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?...

Posts: 1511 April 29, 2012 11:43 AM	It was cold but fun. I hadn't been to the stadium or in around campus in couple years. I can understand Bret Bielema's frustration with the receivers. Somebody make a catch and they'll play! My God they threw to Marquis Mason enough, you've got to make some grabs. They got better as game went on. I think Stave is going to make it an actual quarterback competition in the fall. I think the crowd will play off of the way the announce spoke Melvin Gordon's name. Hopefully he can find away to get some reps. He certainly has the talent. Some good hits on defense. I think the crowd count was accurate and pretty good for a pretty crappy day. It was a good thing they waited until 4 p.m. to play because the rain had stopped by then.

Posts: 6738 April 29, 2012 9:44 PM	Gordon will be a weapon. Bounces up after tough hits. Stave got the better of the protection. If needed, he's ready. Very poised and accurate. One bad read and a great pick. Blocking for Brennan not nearly as good. In spite of that he played pretty well. Wright hit hard even though he looks kind of thin. Fenton showed very well as did O'Neil. Hammond should be one of he top 4 receivers. Voltz played center on the Whites. He's still in HS. Maybe 2 good punts all game. It looks like they're force feeding Williams at WR. They must see something in him. All in all the receiving corps looks better than expected. D line will be solid especially if Costigan got moved to O line. I guess they don't need him there so there must be quality depth.

Posts: 1326 April 30, 2012 12:29 AM	Abbrederis just might be our most indespensible player this season. The other WR's have talent, but man are they raw. Too many drops yesterday. Hammond made some nice grabs and seemed to be the only one who hung onto the ball consistently. Mason, Williams, Doe and Jordan all dropped balls that they shouldn't have. I think it's safe to say that we're going to miss Brad Nortman. Drew Meyer shanked half of his punts. One would assume that we'll be forced to punt more this year than we did last year. Meyer really needs to shore things up between now and September. I was quite impressed with Stave. If for whatever reason O'Brien doesn't pan out, Stave won't be chopped liver. Considering he's only a redshirt frosh, I think he'll leave his mark on the program when all is said and done. Gordon was as advertised. The next great Wisconsin RB in the making. Caputo seems to have really taken a step forward. He was making hits left and right. Beau Allen is an absolute tank. I think he can be all all-conference player this year. The Coach Andersen era has begun.

Hammond was the only one who caught the ball with any consistency, and he had to go up and get more than one. If that's normal, and not him just having a good day, he'll play quite a bit. I thought Stave threw a nice ball for the most part. After hearing about the quarterbacks at last years spring game, I thought he looked half way decent. Keefer made a couple of real nice plays, shooting the gap. The secondary was all over the receivers for the most part, though that might have more to do with the receivers. Still don't see anybody on the D-line that is really going to get after the quarterback. Hopefully Gilbert is that guy. Is he injured, or was he just being held out because they know what he can do?

Posts: 6444 April 30, 2012 9:39 AM Ed Nuttycombe	After watching the replay last night I've changed my area of concern. Even if O'Brien is a bust, we can win games with Stave, but the WRs? Please, someone, anyone, take that next step and claim a wide open spot. We have plenty of physical specimens, but nobody yet outside of Abby (hopefully Duckworth) who is legit, yet. The D looks very deep and ready to look a lot like the '99 D if we can find that DE who even somewhat resembles Burke; the LB corps is deep and I have faith in what we have available in the secondary and at DT. Those who have mentioned Allen ain't kidding - he's a potential beast in the middle of the Hawthorne/Bryant vintage. Every time he opens his mouth he lowers the sum total of human intelligence.

From what I understand, he's healing as expected and is on pace to begin summer conditioning in June. The Coach Andersen era has begun.

Think about the slant possibilities when they put 8 in the box to stop the run. In the second half it seemed Stave was playing for both teams did Brennan get hurt or did they want to see Joel with other receivers? Black socks vs White socks. 2.5 seconds to throw? How do you go down field in 2.5 seconds?

I don't think Gordon was in the end zone from the tv's vantage point in the td, and there was a great stop there by a guy, who I think was Jerry Ponio. 2. Great tackling on the part of the secondaries, particularly the White team secondary, which I believe had several non-scholarship players...really surprised me. I'd want to look over the replay again, but there was some fine db play by the white team. Red team didn't have to show as much, since the dl took over. 3. Mason is a challenge. What a frame and has lots of strength, speed, but the finesse and catching ability is very questionable. Will it ever come around? To a certain extent, like guys with speed or no speed, you have that great ability to catch or you don't. Sadly, I don't think he has it. 4. But I think I. Williams will be okay and certainly Hammond needs consideration given his fine play. 5. Okay, he ran for 150+, but Gordon needs to finish better. 6. Stave hurries a little too much, and throws a fine ball, but sometimes too "flat" a ball, and could work on touch. Some of those "misses" by receivers were on passes that had a lot of pace, and not real easy to handle. He's going to be okay and will push O'Brien. 7. With Stave's athleticism, I would think they could have rolling pockets left or right, or just have him move in the pocket. I can't recall one pass where he moved around, and took time to pass. It seems like he's working too hard to make sure he's not sacked. That sacrifices a second or so of time for receivers to be open. 8. I think our defense will be solid. And I think the pass rush will be there. 9. Lewis will be less than average B10 rb, so we need to have other three healthy. 10. Punting team will be a challenge. 11. I have trouble evaluating line and lb play without the aid of replay and replay, and won't take the time to do it. And with the obvious concern...is defense playing well, or offense just a little weak...I think we'll be stout on both sides of the ball. Ol may not be 2011 strenght, but early read is that they'll be solid or better. 12. I think the major concern is will we be able to generate a passing attack that is potent enough to keep teams from playing 8 and 9 committed to the run. Right now, I'd say marginal, but O'Brien could make a difference. This is a completely different offense than last year.

Posts: 6738 May 1, 2012 8:37 AM	Agree with nearly all. 11. Overall, I don't see any dropoff on the O line. Havenstein will be a step up at RT with a year's experience. Groy has more speed than most RGs we've seen. With all the pulling they do that's a nice asset. Voltz is very advanced for his age. Stave does have a lot of zip, maybe too much at times. Like Stocco, he may need to learn to float some balls at times. Brennan did throw one real dandy to the sideline into tight coverage. Tough to campare the 2 QBs since Brennan got much the worst of protection.
