Posts: 1629 June 14, 2012 8:55 PM Chime's wing man	Remove this ad With the Dream Team film coming out yesterday, I was surfing youtube and watched some of the video from the 80 hockey team...I have a question. Mark Johnson had a great game and Olympics, but he is never in any of the ESPN films and some of the others, the guys on there talk about him, but he was hardly interviewed, does anybody know why? __________________"I use to think Drinking was bad for me, so I gave up thinking"

Posts: 4123 June 18, 2012 10:39 PM	Remove this ad I have a hard time getting upset with Eruzione for embracing the moment because it was the single greatest moment in American sports and he knew he wasn't going to make any money playing the game. It does suck how Johnson gets overlooked. If you asked anyone with at least a little hockey history knowledge who the leading scorer was on that team, sadly 95% of the people outside of Wisconsin and 50% of the people inside the state would probably say Eruzione. For the casual fan who can name somebody on the team Eruzione would come up first, Craig second, and unless you are in MN, WI, or MA who knows how many people could actually name a 3rd person from that team?

Posts: 10452 June 20, 2012 2:14 PM Shout, shout - let it all out. These are the things I can do without.	Johnson by personality seems neither sentimental nor self-aggrandizing. There is a story in "Boys of Winter" about Johnson almost selling his gloves from the '80 team at a garage sale for a tiny amount- not realizing the memorabilia potential or even caring about it. They were just cluttering his garage. Another interview of that team member- I can't remember if it was Johnson or whoever- mentioned that the Olympics was two weeks of their life and they were isolated during it to the point they didn't have a strong realization of the impact they were having nationally or globally. The practiced in virtual anonymity for months before the games, but the time in Lake Pacid was a blur. Herb Brooks isolated the team from the media, and they spent their off-time in the Olympic Village doing what young guys do with time on their hands instead of reading their clippings. Backup goalie Steve Janaszak met his wife there, for instance. After the Olympics, they went their separate ways- most ending up being very busy playing hockey somewhere. They didn't have much time to bask or reflect, save Eruzione who had already decided to retire from the sport. Johnson played for Pittsburgh at the end of that season. Defenseman Ken Morrow was a key player in the Cup-winning Isles that year. Etc. I loved watching that team as my family had a Madison connection not only with Johnson, but also with Bob Suter who was a high school classmate of my sister and whose mom was an acquaintance of my mom. It made something very huge also very tangible.

Actually, given the two from UW and the many from Minnesota, we were familiar with a lot of them before we watched them play. They were almost anonymous in the Cities, too. Back in 1980 I think I figured out that serious UW fans would have seen something like 18 of the 20 play college hockey. I recall that we played Morrow's Bolling Green team in an NCAA consolation game. I think we played BU or BC a time or two as well. Johnson is/was too quiet and unassuming to make a great TV interview. Huge hero for fans of Madison Memorial, Wisconsin and US Olympic teams though. On, Wisconsin!
