What is your "back up" passion?

Been on the sidelines for a few years but my father in law just ordered a pretty insane pair of speakers and told me he is giving me his current pair: Wilson Audio Sophia 3s, plus his Wilson Audio sub. Very sweet, but this will force me back into the market for some electronics that do justice to the speakers. I'm thinking of keeping my home theater surround sound speaker set up but getting a new multi zone pre/pro, running the Wilsons as a separate, stereo dedicated zone for music only, the surround sound home theater speakers as a second zone, and the deck speakers as a third zone. I have B&W zeppelin speakers in the kitchen, den and living room and run those wirelessly via airplay. This sounds like the most cost effective solution. My other option is to use the Wilsons as part of a new surround sound system and get a new center channel and surround speakers. Don't love that since I currently have wall mounted and in walls for the surround sound system that would have to come down/be replaced. Too pricey. Any tips on equipment would be welcomed. I tend to get passionate about my new interests. They die down as new interests surface but never disappear altogether. As always, this post is written with the express proviso that I am not a chicken little. The sky is not falling. My office window does not have a ledge. I'm happy we won. I heard some ranked teams even lost. I'm glad we are not Virginia Tech. I like our coach. I know these are 19 year old kids. The season is young. Mistakes will get cleaned up. Fowler said even Alabama threw an interception once. The other guys are on scholarship, too. After living through the Don morton era, I'm just glad to be here.

I like your idea of using the Wilson's in a dedicated two-channel system and then using a separate setup for your home theater. The catch, of course, is that you will have invest a nice chunk into a system of expensive seperates to do justice to the Wilson's. A friend is using McIntosh to run his B&W 802D's and it sounds incredible. Two other good brands to check out are Classe' and Bryston. If not afraid of buying used try audiogon.com, bought some A/V gear with great success.

Posts: 5140 July 17, 2012 10:01 AM	I love Audiogon, MT. I've gone through many phases of logging on every morning, like Buckyville. I almost pulled the trigger on a really sweet Classe system a few years ago but couldn't justify the cost. Bryston's SST multi channel amps are workhorses. I've had my eye on them for a while, too. A brand I've owned in the past is Lexicon but they are good for complex multi-room set-ups. Their benchmark MC-12 (if it still is) is more than I need here. Parasound made a nice processor/amplifier set up and I'll look at Rotel and maybe Krell, too. Halcro Logic and Meridien are two other companies I remember. I'll have to start researching and follow Audiogon again since I'm out of the game a bit. I don't know if your friend has the McIntosh MX119 but that is a sweet home theater processor (despite McIntosh's late and somewhat grudging entree into the home theater surround space). I'd definitely be into that if I found the right deal. If I decide to be smart about it I'll sit back and wait for my father-in-law to live with his new speakers for a few weeks, at which point, like clockwork, he will start to upgrade his components. He currently has a really nice McIntosh pre-amp with Levison amps. That wouldn't work for the home theater set up I mentioned but I could step into a McIntosh/Levison/Wilson Sophia 3 system without dropoping a dime I'll figure it out. If all hunting ceased, I would probably get season tickets for Badger football and go to all the Packer games. I don't understand the point of this theoretical exercise.
