The team averaged 8.6 PPG, and gave up 31.9 PPG. The closest game was the infamous 21-20 loss to Indiana. OSU won the Big Ten title that year with a 10-0 record. The Gophers, with a few occasional hiccups, were truly dominant basically from their inception all the way through the end of Bierman's first tenure (1941). Other than the 1961 and 1967 seasons, they've been more or less the same every year since 1941 - mediocre-to-poor. Since 1967, the Gophers have finished 3rd in the Big Ten three times. Of course, they've never finished 1st or 2nd in that time frame.

Posts: 7095 June 26, 2012 8:47 PM Phil King "200 lbs, dripping wet"	In 1967, John Coatta's Badgers went 0-9-1, tying Iowa 21-21. UW and Iowa finished the season 0-6-1 in Big Ten play. The Kardiac Kids of Indiana went to the Rose Bowl, finishing 6-1, as did Minnesota and Purdue. UW lost to Indiana 14-9, as a John Boyijian pass to an open receiver at the end of the game went into section Z. Bless the Badgers.

Posts: 7095 June 27, 2012 10:47 PM Phil King "200 lbs, dripping wet"	In 1966, Milt Bruhn's final year as head coach, the UW finished 3-6-1. They beat Iowa State, Iowa and Minnesota (7-6) in Uncle Miltie's final game. The players carried him off the field on their shoulders, as the half empty stadium both cheered and sang "Goodbye, Miltie." The tie was a 3-3 game against Northwestern, a game I attended and from which I still have the program. Stirring stuff for a kid, a 3-3 tie with Northwestern! Bruhn's final team was as anemic offensively as could be, averaging 8.7 PPG. Only 4 times did they score over 10 points in a game. They gave up 21.2 PPG. Thus ended Milt Bruhn's career as Wisconsin head coach. He finished with an overall record of 52-45-6 (.534) and a Big Ten record of 35-37-5 (.487). He was 0-2 in the Rose Bowl. Michigan State won the conference that year with a 7-0 record, 9-0-1 overall. The tie was the infamous 10-10 tie with Notre Dame. MSU could not play in the Rose Bowl, since they had represented the conference the prior year. They finished second to Notre Dame in the polls. Purdue, with a 9-2 record, went to the Rose Bowl, beat USC 14-13, and finished in the top 10 in the final rankings. Bless the Badgers. Edited 2 times by TheMonsignor June 27, 2012 10:53 PM.

The Badgers finished 2-7-1, tying Colorado 0-0 in the first game of the season – a harbinger. UW beat only lowly Iowa and Northwestern. I attended my first ever Badger game this year, and saw what was billed as the rematch of the 1963 Rose Bowl when USC came to town. The Trojans dominated the Badgers, winning 26-6. Some kid named Mike Garrett rushed for over 200 yards that day. Among the illustrious losses were a 51-0 pasting by Illinois (was this the Grabowski team? Butkus?) and a 42-7 loss to the hated Gophers in the season finale. This Badger squad was outscored on an average of 29.1 PPG to 8.1 PPG. Michigan State won the Big Ten with a 7-0 record, 10-1 overall, but lost to UCLA 14-12 in the Rose Bowl and finished second in the polls to Alabama. Bless the Badgers.

This was the first of the desultory Bruhn teams that eventually spelled his removal, coming after a good 7-year run. The team averaged 10.9 PPG and gave up 25.4 PPG. The worst loss was again to the Illini, 29-0 at Champaign. Michigan won the Big Ten title at 6-1, 9-1 overall, beat Oregon State 34-7 in the Rose Bowl, and finished #4 in national rankings. Bless the Badgers.

Posts: 7095 July 1, 2012 12:30 AM Phil King "200 lbs, dripping wet"	In 1963, the Badgers were 4-0 and ranked #2 in the nation on October 26 when they lost to OSU 13-10, in Madison. The season went downhill from there, as the team finished 5-4, including a 14-0 loss at Minneapolis to end the season. A disappointing follow up to the fantastic season the year before. The UW scored an average of 16.7 PPG and gave up an average of 13.8 PPG. Illinois won the conference at 5-1-1, 8-1-1 overall, and beat Washington 17-7 in the Rose Bowl, finishing 4th in the final rankings. Bless the Badgers.

Wisconsin went 8-1 in the regular season, losing only to Ohio State, 17-14 in Columbus, and beating teams ranked #1 (Northwestern) and #5 (Minnesota) during the regular season. The final game against the Gophers was a classic, with the UW winning 14-9, and clinching the Rose Bowl berth. The team had such famous names as Richter, VanderKelen, and Bowman Wisconsin went on to lose what is arguably still the greatest Rose Bowl of all time, 42-37, to the USC Trojans. The '62 team scored 32.2 PPG and gave up only 13.0 PPG. The Badgers ended the season ranked #2 nationally. Although the final record of 8-2 is a bit of a let down, this was surely one of the top Wisconsin teams of all time, and an argument could be made that it was the best. Bless the Badgers.

Posts: 7095 July 2, 2012 9:42 PM Phil King "200 lbs, dripping wet"	In 1961, the Badgers went 6-3. It was Bruhn's 4th winning season out of 6, and he followed it up with the great '62 campaign. The UW losses were to 10th ranked MSU, 4th ranked Iowa, and 6th ranked OSU. Iowa must have faded from that early season ranking, as they finished the season 5-4. In the season finale in Minneapolis, UW beat the #3 ranked Gophers, 23-21. I bet that was a sweet train ride home. The 1961 team average 19.9 PPG and gave up 17.6 PPG. They won some close games and got blown out in a couple of those losses. As a junior, Pat Richter was All Big Ten and made first team on a couple of All American teams. OSU was the conference champion at 6-0, 8-0-1 overall. Minnesota would have won the conference but for the loss to Wisconsin, the Gophers finishing 6-1 in the Big Ten. But this was that odd year when OSU declined the Rose Bowl bid (reasons? something about academic standards? at OSU? REALLY??!?!). So the Gophers went to the Rose Bowl and defeated UCLA, 21-3. It is Minnesota's last Rose Bowl appearance (but what is 50+ years among friends?). OSU finished #2 in the polls, Minnie #6 and MSU was #8. Bless the Badgers.

Posts: 7095 July 4, 2012 1:08 AM Phil King "200 lbs, dripping wet"	The 1960 Badgers had a good start to the season, but faded by losing their last three games and finished 4-5 for the year, 2-5 in conference. They were ranked #11 before losing to OSU on October 22 in Columbus. They beat Michigan the following week in Madison, 16-13, but then lost those last three. This was the last year that the UW played Marquette. As per usual, the Badger pounded the (Gold? Warriors? Eagles?) Hilltoppers 35-6. In November, the #1 ranked Iowa Hawkeyes traveled to Minneapolis and lost to the #3 ranked Gophers, giving the Gophers the conference title when both teams finished 6-1 (Minnie lost to Purdue the next week). The polls, taken before the bowl games in this era, ranked the Gophers the top team in the country and they still claim it as a national title. After the polls closed, Minnesota lost the Rose Bowl to Washington, 17-7. Recount! PS -- Given my slovenly posting, I may be a day or two off on days to football. Will try to catch up on the 4th. It almost reads like the building of a team of a great 'national contending' capability, and then immediately falling off a cliff. I can't imagine how that would have played out in today's world.

Most would say that Uncle Miltie never adjusted to the new world of football in the 1960's. He was still recruiting and game-planning as if it were 1959, and the rest of the college world was moving on to a much faster game, with a broader base of recruiting. Also, remember that at that time, the coaches were all tenured professors. When Bruhn was fired as football coach, he continued to teach in the Physical Education Department. That changed with the next hire. Bless the Badgers.
