2013 Class a Sign of Philosophy Change?

Posts: 1802 November 16, 2012 5:24 PM	Remove this ad I apologize if we've discussed this before, but Ole and Evan Flood were discussing the 2013 class and how it might signal a change in philosophy for Bo. We didn't offer Luke Fischer, we recruited 2 shooting guards to go alongside Koenig, and all the forwards we recruited were a little smaller than in previous years. Could this be a sign that there's a change in Bo's approach going forward? Not suggesting that Ernie Peavy is gonna come run the press for us, just wondering if Bo has changed his mind on the value of 6'10"+ guys and also if we might see any other changes.

So it was an understandable wait-and-see situation rather than a we-didn't-recruit-him situation. If he was still available this past summer, my guess is that we would have been recruiting him.

Posts: 2594 November 16, 2012 7:10 PM	I don't think the staff thought Fisher was good enough at the time. There were questions of strength, toughness, rebounding. Fisher committed early and has made signifivant strides since that.

My question is whether he'll qualify at IU as a good enough player in Crean's eyes since he is oversigned and still recruiting like crazy. I could see him being a casualty if Crean has some success with these guys.

Rumor was they were going to offer Maverick Morgan on his visit but he committed to Illinois the day before he was supposed to come here. Vitto was offered right around then and I think it was right after Morgan committed. So maybe there is a change but not a big one. I think maybe they are more selective on the true bigs they do offer.

If you watch utubes of Bronson you will see that every sweet pass from him to Fischer usually resulted in a dunk. I watched a number of the aau games and I cant recall Fischer making a move on his own or a shot from the outside(his shot is not so good)on his own. And I do remember a number of times when he did make a move on his own and have it stripped or blocked. I am not saying he could'nt get better, but at a number of those games Bo was watching but then he had already commited. I just think they did not think he was that good...I do wish they would have checked out Hegner more because the kid can shoot it for a big.

Posts: 2867 November 17, 2012 9:33 AM	We're after both Diamond Stone and Ellenson currently. Not sure this has anything to do with a philosophy change. Pretty sure Bo would take as many long, athletic, and highly skilled players as he can get each and every year. Our recruiting is and has been improving imo over the years which probably has more to do with this year's class than anything else.

Whatever it is, I like the make up of this class and think putting it back-to-back with Marshall and Dekker could turn into some pretty good basketball down the road.

Good kid, good family who deserve better. Reminds me of Maymon, who the Therapists were so glad to get when it was clear UW had zero interest. He is anice player who at the time did not fit.

Posts: 5998 November 18, 2012 7:32 AM	Definite philosophy change. For the past several years, Bo seemed to bring in at least 1 BIG per class, or at least have 3 or 4 on his roster. Gavinski and Marolf didn't pan out. Jury is still out on Anderson. It's a luxury to have one or two true bigs who contribute quality minutes, but it's not necessary. Diamond Stone may be that particular player that's worth going after —but they're skipping out on 3 or 4 other guys they might have otherwise recruited to fill Berggren's, Kaminsky's and Anderson's spots. If they can't land Stone and no one else is viable, bring in the next 6-7 to 6-9 kid with good bounce, long arms and is quicker than a true 5. don't jab, poke, pierce, stab, or joust with your sausage. you'll lose juice, and ultimately flavor. scoobs - 11/11/02

Posts: 439 November 18, 2012 8:52 AM	Remove this ad Considering the finite height of the basket having 6'-10+ bigs isn't necessary unless they can move like the Icebergg. Since Bo's philosophy is to have weak side help block shots in the post, quickness, long arms and quick leaping may be more important for bigs. Bo's switching defense also necessitates having quicker post players. If Fischer gets Creaned he will probably end up at Marquette where someone will get Buzzcut to make room for him. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "We're not greedy.
