Nothing I love better than seeing a hard hitting physical football game
At the end of the day, OSU made some big plays, we made almost none
1. Punt return for TD
2. Defensive player crushing Watt on ball to end zone
3. Defensive player knocking ball away from MB on the dive at the goal line
We had chances to make the following plays:
1. Chase Hammond has to catch that first ball
2. Abby wide open on 3rd play and ball thrown almost 10 yards the wrong direction
3. Passed up kicking a 47 yard FG (still puzzled)
4. Missed a shorter FG
5. Watt not going to the ball and making the catch
6. MB not plowing thru pile. Didn't need a TD on that play, needed head down to get the 1st down
Make plays you win games. We didn't make em
Yes there were some atrocious calls by the officials. Missed PI against MB. Marginal late hit on Southward. Questionable hold on Frederick. Absurdly missed hold in OT. Spot on the 3rd down run.
Don't get undies in bunches but Phillips throws are not good. Great kid. Doing his best, playing his heart out. Not a good passer. Not able to be a good runner anymore either. Repeatedly ran himself out of the pocket and INTO pressure. His whole progression/recognition is slow. His delivery/release is slow and his speed on the throws is slow.
Would have like to see a LOT more of the barge. Would have liked to see a LOT more of the jet sweep
I am completely confused by decisions on some of the play calling at the end. You have a first down with no timeouts and you run MB? And then with quite a bit of time, instead of running a play, you give away a down by spiking the ball? Leaving you a 3rd and long (which we ultimately picked up and ultimately scored so it is not getting a focus here but still bad decision IMO)
At the end of the 3rd quarter, I really did not like the 3rd down call to just have MB run it to the middle of the field Would have much rather see an aggressive play to try to get the first down. What I really disliked is that it ran out the 3rd quarter and then IMO we completely iced our own kicker by making French go thru the whole Student Section race and Jump Around and the TV timeouts before attempting the kick. Don't get me wrong, French HAS to make that kick, but I dont think we helped him there at all
The play calling in OT made no sense. You have 2nd and 4 and you take the ball away from your best players (your RBs) and give it to your worst offensive player? RUN THE FOOTBALL. Barge, jet sweep, misdirection, something. You have no time constraints, so why are we rushing to try to throw it into the end zone?
Bottom line, we had the field position virtually the entire second half, and for much of the game. We had the opportunity to put up some more points. We had 7 points in the first 59:50 of the game. When you dominated the way we did defensively and have such great field position, you have to capitalize. After Ball's TD we got the ball back with great field position again and immediately had Phillips on 3 of those plays. The energy and the crowd and the team were pumped and we go to passing the ball?? And not even on a play action? Just a designed roll out?
Very disappointing to lose this game, just like it was disappointing to lose the MSU game.
And our OT record is poor. Have we won a Big Ten OT game since the win at Minnesota which I think was 1999?
