Posts: 7044 December 3, 2012 4:14 PM FEAR THE VISOR!	Put me in the "no" camp. Some sort of shrine is warranted, but retiring the number is too high of an honor. From this point on it should be for the highest honor a player can receive (Heisman) or for tremendous off field contributions (like giving your life for something). The point about guys like Thomas, Watt, Carimi, Wilson, etc not being up there is valid. Was Ball that much better than those guys? Part of that TD record belongs to Carimi, Wagner, Moffit, Frederick and all the other big uglies on the line.

Posts: 1663 December 4, 2012 9:01 AM	I'm inclined to vote yes. I don't like the idea of a de facto "no Heisman, no way" rule. Why should we surrender the decision about retirement of numbers by our program to a subjective vote by a bunch of outside media idiots? I'd rather focus on objective criteria, and retire numbers of those who have some very significant historical achievement. When he graduated, Ameche was the NCAA's all-time leading rusher, and Dayne, of course, is the current holder of that title. College football has been played since 1869, and nobody in those 140+ years has scored more touchdowns than Montee Ball. In my mind, that's an achievement worthy of the highest honor that the program can bestow. And I'm aware that the approach I've outlined would largely exclude players who play positions where there aren't counting stats. I'm not sure how to deal with the Joe Thomases of the program. However, that uncertainty doesn't lessen the fact that Ball has achieved at the very highest level.

Posts: 1608 December 4, 2012 10:06 AM	Pretty much what ballsandpucks said. I know Ron Dayne is the standard, but he scored 19 fewer touchdowns than Ball on almost 200 more touches. Goodness gracious, that's remarkable. I guess the rest of you are less impressed with the touchdown record than I am. You play the game to score touchdowns and Montee Ball did that better than any single player who has ever played college football. If that's not worthy of the highest recognition the school can offer, then I don't know what is.

Much controversy this year with some old-timer sportswriters who simply will not vote for a freshman and the other two finalists being a defensive player and a largely disinteresting QB from a normally less-than-relevant B12 school. That said, I think Teo gets it being that ND is undefeated and he's made plenty of big plays in big nationally televised games. Further, in Michael Mauti fashion, the cameras have shown him on the sidelines emphatically cheering his offense on. The type of scene that Heisman voters relish. If Montee did what he did last year and we ran the table (team was easily capable), then I think he would have won the Heisman and retiring 28 would be a no-brainer. All things considered, I think if he delivers a RB win this year, I would not have a problem retiring the number...if not though, then I think 28 goes back into the till. My opinion FWIW. Did we retire Hirsch when UW didn't have many that actually could be retired? Other than being an animated / exciting player and a UW icon, not sure that the on-field results warrant the honor. Also, voluntarily or not, he went and played for Michigan too. Could be way off here, but need someone with some history books or someone much older than myself.

There's a finite number available and, unless we expect football to fade into obscurity any time soon, it's crazy to make numbers unavailable. Is anyone else bothered seeing our QB and CB sharing the same number? And how many kids suit up for home games? Honor the greats in some way short of removing their numbers from the availability pool. Honor their names. Honor Money Ball. If we ever got to the point that we were running out of available numbers as a result of retiring the numbers of players like Montee and RD, I think I'd be okay with that...
