Middle School Wresting - Jared Stevens' First Wrestling Match

This is the first wrestling match for Jared at Sunset Middle School in Brentwood, TN. Jared has severe cerebral palsy but loves to participate in all forms of sports...in any way possible. He played on the the football team last year and the coaches invited him to wrestle this year.

Ok, is this a sign that our kids are alright and compassionate or has it gone too far?

Probably felt pretty good to be that other kid. Sometimes there are things more important than winning.

It's an absolute paradox. The bacon must have been finished, thus disallowing the possibility of 'leftover'. And yet, were that impossibility to occur, surely it would be good. -LeviBooth

Is every kid going to pull this kid on top of him and pin him? I get the idea of letting the kid score in football or basketball in the last game of the season. Not pulling the kid on top of you to get pinned.

This is his first wrestling match. What happens the next 30 times. Do all the other kids purposely lose? What if this was HS? Does MS make it different?

I think the Olympic creed is a good measuring stick.

I don't think this is an example of fighting well. Maybe I'm just a cynic but it feels different.

JFC give the kid a minute and a half of happiness. If it happens at every other match who fucking cares? 45 total minutes over the course of 30 matches. God forbid!

The fucking kid fights every damn day, probably a hell of a lot harder than many of us.

The disputatious one

According to Stevens' father, Phil Stevens, Jared Stevens has the physical strength of a toddler, unable to even stand on his own. Still, the younger Stevens practices with the Sunset wrestling team every day, lying on the mat to serve as a practice partner for his teammates.
For his first match, Stevens' coach, Clay Mayes, asked the Freedom coach to pick the player "with the kindest heart" to face Stevens. Without pause, Kievet, the first seventh-grade captain in school history, was nominated.
"I was a little nervous," Kievet told the Tennessean. "Then I kind of figured out what to do."
Nervous about an intentional loss. Clearly Kievet has both compassion and maturity beyond Kievet's years.

Why does a 7th grader get it and Strangebrew doesn't.

The kid isn't out there to compete. They aren't coaching the game or the integrity of the (middle school) sport. The kids gets to go out and get some mat time. How is there a problem?
