Why do wrestling dual meets start at different weight classes?

What is random is which weight class begins the meet. The subsequent bouts follow the typical weight class sequence. For instance, say there is some random flip that leads to the first match beginning at 184. The next four bouts would be 197, Hwt, 125 and 133. Edit: I forgot to answer the second question. It has been too many years since I wrestled to know the answer for certain. However, I am presuming that the ritual has not changed too much. It would work like this. Both teams weigh in, say, one to two hours before the dual meet begins. Once the wrestlers are certified at weight, the flip is done in picking which weight class goes first. Note: tournaments still follow the traditional format with the wrestling starting at the lowest weight class and working up sequentially to the heaviest weight class. ****************** "Goldie: The only mascot who's been spayed." Posts: 2175 December 10, 2012 6:00 PM	I think something that may have come into play, which I agree with, is a close match always came down to the HWT winning or losing the match. As a typical fan, you usually only factor in the last match, and if you lose because of the last match, it's always, "we would have won if (insert wrestlers name) would have won." As a high school kid that can be a big burden to shoulder if you're not that good. Most people forget about the other kids who lost earlier in the match. "NEVER TRUST ANYONE WITH MORE EARS THAN TEETH!"

Posts: 1988 December 18, 2012 8:42 PM	The only reason for the change in starting weight is wait time between weigh-ins and wrestling. The idea is that wrestlers would be less likely to cut a ton of weight if they had less time between weigh-ins and match time. Example: If I'm a 189 pounder I used to not care much about losing three pounds in water weight the day of the meet because I knew I'd have an extra hour before my match would begin. Weight ins start at 5:30, the 103 pounders would have to wrestle at 7:00 but the 189 match would start at maybe 7:55. The 189 pounder knew he could rehydrate much easier and the 103 pounders would have to hurry to rehydrate, warmup and wrestle. I don't think the rule is as effective as it should be because most kids still don't make healthy choices regarding weight maintenance, hydration, etc. College wrestlers are probably a bit smarter but my high school kids don't get it. Unhealthy diets, lack of energy, etc.

Even the Finals at State tend to be a lot of tying up and pushing each other around. I went to both Wisconsion's and Minnesota's State tournaments last year and I can tell you the MN HWT was just awesome. Mike Krolls from Scott West, who wrestles for MN now, totally destroyed the two-time defending State Champ. He actually was a 220 pounder but went up just to take this kid on and Krolls dominated him. Btw, Krolls is a great kid and will do really well for the Gophers. "NEVER TRUST ANYONE WITH MORE EARS THAN TEETH!"

I actually enjoy watching high school heavyweights better than good collegiate heavyweights. The collegiates never want to risk anything because if they take a bad shot they get 250+ defending their shot. A good high school heavyweight is at least impressive to see because he can put on a show. John Jude from Bradley Tech was pretty fun to see in last year's state tournament. His finals match against Stumpf from Kimberly was quite a contrast in body styles. Stumpf is about a foot taller than Jude.
