Have a buddy with some connections at UW. Based on what he's told me, the hire is going to be Joe Rudolph.

I'm serious okay with that, as long as the circumstance was our first 4-5 choices turned us down.

I would be sanguine with this decision. Not exuberant. Not disappointed. Sanguine.

In fact, this would very much be the "Barry trying to find his Tom Osborne" pick. I wouldn't shock me if BA just doesn't want to spin the coaching carousel again in his tenure as AD, so he's hoping for a guy with roots and lots of good reason to stick around.

Wouldn't bother me a whole lot. He'll have his bumps I'm sure but it would allow for some continuity and we always thought/known that Joe was a star in the making. He would bring energy and excitement. Still lets see what happens with Chris Petersen today as he's far and away the best candidate.

There are other guys I'd rank higher because of their experience but would have no issues with Joe Rudolph at all. Especially given the fact that BA would be around to mentor him early on.

Rudolph is someone that Barry loves, but at this point he is a back-up choice due to his lack of experience. This is according to my connections at UW.

I can't get past Rudolph eating his own booger at the Rose Bowl last year. Hopefully there is something in the contract about that.

I could embrace a Joe Rudolph hire...but like others, I imagine there are lots of others going through the process.

Joe is one of those hires that if it happened could cause the program to take a step back in terms of public perception initially but 2-3 years down the road would be universally regarded as a fantastic hire.

Would be similar to the Pat Fitzgerald hire at NW but on a much bigger scale.

How much of a back-up? 3rd choice? 4th choice? 5th?

My "list before Rudolph" looks like:

Petersen
Golden
Diaco
Bostad

I wonder what Barry's is? Think if I call the athletic office they'd put me through and he's tell me?

If Rudolph is the choice, I would guess they wouldn't tell the world he was not the first choice.

That said, I still think he'd be a very solid pick.

Gotta be honest here, I find it really, really hard to believe Chris Petersen is truly a candidate for the job. Given how savvy Barry is with stuff like this - and he's supposedly a widely-respected 'player' in the movement of coaches - I find it hard to believe he would actually speak a legitimate candidate's name in public like he's done with Petersen.

To me, this all but guarantees Petersen is nothing more than a canard designed to keep reporters and fans busy while the action truly takes place elsewhere.

Didn't he do this 20+ years ago in his first month of recruiting with a guy he had recruited to ND? I can't recall the name of the guy, it was an in-state guy that had no interest in UW but Barry got him to take a visit, generate a little buzz for the program and show people he was going for the best kids.

Kind of similar here where he shows people he's aiming high and helps get Petersen a few more dollars from Boise?

I get your point but you've got to remember the situations are completely different. 20+ years ago, Barry didn't have a whole lot to sell. Today, he does. And then some.

Right now, I doubt Barry is worried about anything other than finding the best guy to enhance what Barry has already built.

I would be more than fine if this were the case but I would like to see Barry stay on the sidelines for a year or two with Rudolph as his assistant head coach and then transition to Joe. From what I hear Barry really likes Rudolph and considers him a star in waiting. I think this would be the best scenario. I assume I am in the minority on this one however.
