Scratch that. He probably had his No. 1 target identified before Bielema blindsided him with the news he was leaving for Arkansas. When asked last week what might happen if he couldn’t get his guy to run the program, Alvarez said without hesitation that he would get his guy. Hunch: Alvarez has his guy and both sides are waiting for the right time to complete the courting process. To me, that sounds like Rudolph.

He gets blindsided by his coach and within five minutes he comes to the conclusion that the most attractive candidate in the country is a guy who hasn't completed a full season as a coordinator yet. Keep in mind that a day or two later he said he preferred someone with head coaching experience.

I missed Mr. Potrykus' final sentence initially, but it seems pretty big. "Despite some of the public statements we’ve heard in the last week, I’m not willing to rule anyone out." That sounds like Chryst or maybe Tucker.

That sounds like Chryst or maybe Tucker. I think the second maybe more than the first. I just don't think Chryst is going to be the guy. Pure speculation, but Chryst's relationship to Alvarez seems to be one of a boss who likes and respects you & thinks you do good work, but just doesn't see you as being fit for the big promotion. When Chryst left Wisconsin the first time, the scuttlebutt was that he was frustrated with the lack of input he had on offensive game planning. The he came back as Co-OC and people said, "A ha, Barry is lining up his successor. It's Paul! He's one of us, he's from a great family, he's a terrific guy. Awesome!" Then two years later is was Boy Wonder who was promoted. It happens in every industry. I don't think Chryst is a bitter or negative guy, but the only recourse he has is to prove himself elsewhere. Maybe he ends up at UW someday as sort of football's answer to Bo Ryan. Just speculating to fill the vacuum of real news......

Also, I think Barry isn't afraid to reach a bit on a HC, but I suspect Rudolph simply is too big of a reach right now. I wouldn't be surprised if Rudolph is on the Barry's new short list...the guy is on that HC path, based on the very positive things you hear from folks who are closer to the program.

Posts: 5523 December 12, 2012 9:38 AM	Tucker fits about every criteria that I want in our next coach - X's and O's guy - Strong coaching pedigree, learned from the best (Saban, Tressel) - Has a personal connection to the University of Wisconsin - Has a personal connection to Barry Alvarez - Young-ish guy who can connect with recruits - Defensive coach....to me it seems a lot easier to find offensive whiz kids like Chryst, Malzahn, Chip Kelly, etc. Finding ways to stop them from scoring is how you win titles.

I.E., create the illusion of a formal (bureaucratic) search. While at a bar the Friday night before the game enjoying a few beers with my friends and cousin, I was told by a bartender if I didn't leave he would "jizz on my face" and Badger fans applauded around.

A level of due diligence has to be evident (ie time passing) to show that the work was doe to prove he's the "right guy", however, I think we're at or nearing that point. Basically, if the guy is a current college assistant, I see no reason why an announcement isn't imminent or close to it. If the guy is a current college head coach, I completely see Alvarez waiting until after said coach's bowl game, while keeping recruits informed on the QT. If the guy is an NFL assistant, there's a logical spot in couple of weeks, perhaps not after the regular season entirely, but not with 3 games to go. If the guy is Belichick, we may have to wait until after the Super Bowl.

I suppose, but I would hate to lose a good assistant or a couple of good recruits so BA can make some bureaucrat feel good about the "search". I would hope that this time is quickly coming to an end if its Rudolph.

Alvarez hasn't given the slightest hint as to who his top choices are. No matter who they hire and when, if the process continues quietly then no one's going to look like a backup plan. Not to mention that I think the "backup plan" thing is overrated as a real concern. Bo Ryan was a backup plan (remember the whole "we want a national name" theme to the search?). Tons of coaches who were backup plans worked out really well. Pete Carroll at USC comes to mind.

Per the Position posting on the Madison website applications are due by December 19th so the earliest we may hear of our new coach would be 12/20?? Of course BA may have his coach already selected by then but if BA wants to keep the bosses in the ivory tower happy he must follow the UW process.

Unless he is interested in causing a raging shitstorm you won't hear any official announcement before the 19th.

I would hope that this time is quickly coming to an end if its Rudolph. Well, let's assume Barry has his man in the bag, but is essentially waiting to to make an announcement. This silent period--theoretically --gives Barry and the new coach time to work out staff make up, etc. Time spent on the front end--before the coach is officially hired--rather than the back end. Hell, assistants--theoretically --might already known that they're staying on by the time an official HC announcment is made. In this sense, no time is really wasted--theoretically. While at a bar the Friday night before the game enjoying a few beers with my friends and cousin, I was told by a bartender if I didn't leave he would "jizz on my face" and Badger fans applauded around.
