I know Bo Ryan certainly wasn't As I said, I am reserving judgement because of Numen's First Law of Coaching Changes. That said, this hire has kind of a Bo Ryan-y flavor about it...an experienced coach who built a strong program at a smaller school and considers the job in Madison to be an exceptional opportunity. Some elements are different- Ryan had UW ties, was a bit older, and had an eye on the UW job for some time- but the idea of a knows-who-he-is grownup coming to town is quite the same.

Posts: 10457 December 21, 2012 4:00 PM Blissfully Disinterested	Going just based on what Barry has said publicly, it sounds like he made a number of contacts that were of the "I'm compiling a list of people to be interviewed. Would you be interested?" variety. I suspect that at least 1-2 of the guys who we'd consider to be 'big names' probably weren't interested in being part of a competitive candidate pool - they probably want to be the one guy UW was going after. Of course, I am talking from the slimmest set of facts possible and could be totally out to lunch. But it would help explain why some guys, for whom UW would be a clear step up in prestige, may not have wanted to risk what they had for only a chance at landing the job.

Mark Stoops, Mario Cristobal & Steve Addazio are names I heard that included on "the list" which have not been previous mentioned. Does this mean they were actually contacted and turned down the job? Who knows? It doesn't mean they were contacted and was certainly not exclusive to these names as we know Tucker, Golden, Taggart & others were also contacted in some form or another. You talk to a few of your top choices who are not interested, and you "settle" for Andersen; OR B. You get your #1 choice... and it's Tim Brewster. Oh, and yes, I am declaring Andersen better than Brewster. Andersen already made the jump to HC at a struggling program, just like Brew did. Andersen, like Brew, had 4 seasons there. Andersen, unlike Brew, turned his program around to an 11-2 record, a bowl victory and a Top 20 finish. Also, Andersen did it without the advantage of being the only D1 program in the state (was 3rd behind Utah and BYU in tradition) nor being located in a fairly recruit-rich, urban area like Minneaparis. Andersen is already proven as a way, way, way better head coach than Brew, even prior to this hire. Short list or not, if Barry wasn't going to go after Chryst (who also must have been on the list) because he hadn't been at Pitt long enough, he surely wasn't going to be all that interested in making one of those other guys renege on their commitment.
