I just became commissioner of a Madison golf league that's been in existence for over 50 years. Unfortunately for me, a team disbanded and I have had trouble replacing it. If you would like to join (or create) a team of four golfers and join our league, please let me know ASAP. (Until we get a team, we'll fill the vacancy with subs.)
Here is some info on the league (you can also go to our league web site for more info). You need not be skilled golfers to join.
- All matches are at Glenway Golf Course on Tuesday nights.
- The league is mainly comprised of UW Employees - steamfitters, electricians, academicians, IT folks, etc. In fact, my team - which joined last season - is the only team without a UW employee. (So, obviously it is not a prerequisite.)
- The 18-week regular season consists of two 9-week halves, and goes from late April to late August.
- The champions of each half play each other for the League Championship after the regular season.
- The league consists of ten teams, with four players per team.
- Each week, teams go head-to-head against another team.
- Tee times are between 4:52 and 6:00 every Tuesday (this year from 4/29 - 8/26)
- If you can't make for a particular week, arrange for a sub. (Greens fees must be paid whether a golfer shows up or not.)
- Handicaps are factored in to determine winners.
- League fees are $20.
- Four prizes are awarded each week for various contests (closest to the pin, longest putt, longest drive, etc.)
- Each player (or sub) pays their own greens fees each week. 2008 greens fees for p.m. leagues are $14.50.
- New players must golf three times before their handicap is established.
- A player's handicap is established by using their last eight scores (or less, if they have golfed less than eight times in the league).
